FREDERICK, MD – The York College
men's soccer team rolled to a solid 6-0 victory Wednesday
afternoon, downing Capital Athletic Conference foe Hood in the
Spartans' final regular season match of 2008. The green and
white close out the 18-game slate having won each of their contests
and posting an 8-0 mark in league play. The Blazers fall to 4-12 on
the season and 1-7 in the CAC.
Freshman forward Kemal Nuspahic
(East Petersburg, Pa./Warwick) provided the visitors with
the early advantage, striking his eleventh score of the season
15:30 into the game. All-Americans Jon Ports (Baltimore,
Md./McDonogh) and Chris Ports (Baltimore, Md./John
Carroll) combined on the play to set up Nuspahic for the
game's first tally.
The Blazer defense would keep the game
tight throughout much of the first half, as the Spartans struggled
to break through for their second. York registered nine shots,
including three on goal between scores, but the green and white was
unable to stretch the lead.
That changed in the 44th minute when
freshman Seth Hurley (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown
West) assisted junior Justin Suchoski (Langhorne,
Pa./Neshaminy). Hurley one-timed a pass to Suchoski who,
in front of the Hood goal, promptly recorded his fifth score of the
year.
The Spartans simply dominated the first
half of play, rattling off 18 shots and six corners while Hood
managed none of either.
The flood-gates opened in the second
stanza as the Spartans tallied four times over a period of 15
minutes. Adam Good (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown
Area) began the spurt after a Brett Sauerberger
(Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) corner was slipped
over to Good by freshman Matt Swiderski (Perry Hall,
Md./Perry Hall). Good then buried his third score of his
sophomore campaign to put the green and white up by a comfortable
3-0 margin.
York's fourth score came via a
rebound as Chris Ports hammered home his eighth of the year after
Hood blocked a shot by Nuspahic. Up 4-0, the Spartans would add a
two more during the frame.
Sauerberger notched his first goal of the
year in the 65th minute after Hurley played a ball to him in front
of goal. With a pair of assists on the day, Hurley's season
total now stands at six helpers, which ties him for the second
highest mark on the squad in that category.
Suchoski would then finish the scoring in
the game's 73rd minute, registering his sixth score of his
junior campaign.
For the game, the Spartans owned a
commanding 30-4 bulge in shots and a 10-1 margin in corner
kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Kyle Marks
(Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) takes the win in net for the
Spartans, as he was not forced to make a save over his 17:17 of
work. Ryan Hock (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood)
relieved Marks and played the majority of the minutes between the
pipes, notching one save over his 58:04 of action.
Kyle Connolly (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) and
Kyle Brooten (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) finished
off the remainder of the contest for the green and white with
Connolly registering one save over ten minutes while Brooten played
the final 4:49. Shawn Fernholz played well for the Blazers making
eleven stops during his 90 minutes.
As the CAC's regular season
champion, the Spartans have a bye for the first-round of the
conference tournament, which will take place this Saturday. York
awaits the winner of Wesley and St. Mary's (Md.) and will
host the victor on Wednesday, November 5. Please check
