YORK, PA – The York College field hockey
team ran into a buzzsaw Tuesday afternoon dropping a 9-2 result at
the hands of #7 Lebanon Valley. The Spartans fall to 8-12 on the
season while the Flying Dutchmen improve to 16-2.
The Spartan defense held tough during the first
15 minutes of the contest as freshman goalkeeper Maggie
Schlauch (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) thwarted several
Dutchmen opportunities. Lebanon Valley eventually broke through as
Alex Wolfe drew first blood 16:19 into the game. Just over three
minutes later, Avery Carter gave the visitors a 2-0 edge when she
hammered home a penalty stroke.
Lebanon Valley would notch a third score at the
19:37 mark as Cait Eckenrode tallied her fourth score of the season
on an assist from Wolfe.
York cut the Dutchmen lead to 3-1, two minutes
following Eckenrode's goal, when senior April
McFarland (York, Pa./Eastern York) recorded her
team-leading 17th goal of the year. After a hit from sophomore
Casey Lawrence (Abbottstown, Pa./Delone Catholic)
from just outside the circle, the blast was tipped by midfielder
Allison Roush (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township)
and angled to McFarland at the left post. The senior captain then
slotted home York's first score of the day.
Only 22 seconds after McFarland's goal,
Jocelyn Novak answered for Lebanon Valley notching not just her
squad's fourth of the day but also her team-best 23rd of the
season. Novak's tally opened the flood gates for the Flying
Dutchmen as they would push their lead to 8-1
In the game's 58th minute of play,
freshman Rachel Houck (Airville, Pa./Kennard-Dale)
scored York's second goal, the first of her career. Roush set
up a teammate once again as she slipped a pass from right to left
across the goal where Houck slammed in her first goal in the green
and white.
Lebanon Valley's Jenni Walker gave the
Dutchmen back their seven-goal cushion when she registered her
first career tally in the contest's 61st-minute.
Walker's score would prove to be the final of the game and
LVC took home the 9-2 victory.
The Flying Dutchmen owned a 20-6 lead in shots
for the game while they also grabbed a 9-5 lead in corners.
Schlauch takes the loss in the Spartan cage,
playing a strong 70 minutes despite the final result. The freshman
notched eight saves while cutting off numerous other chances.
Defenders Joan Shultis (Hanover, Pa./Delone
Catholic) and Julie Reahl (Eldersburg,
Md./Liberty) each recorded a defensive save for the
Spartans. Goalkeeper Caitlin Baro registered the win for the
Dutchmen, making a pair of stops over her 70 minutes of action.
The loss concludes York's regular season
play as the Spartans' now turn their sights to the Capital
Athletic Conference Tournament. The green and white is set to
travel to Mary Washington on Sunday, November 2, for the
tournament's quarterfinal round. Please check
