ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – Adam
Good's (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area)
47th-minute tally lifted the #2 York College men's soccer
team to a 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory over St.
Mary's College of Maryland on a windy Saturday afternoon in
St. Mary's City, Md. With the win the Spartans clinched the
CAC regular season title while their record now stands at a
sparkling 17-0 including 7-0 in CAC play. The Seahawks fall to
5-8-4 overall and 3-3-2 in league action.
Good notched the game's lone tally just
1:46 into the second stanza. Junior Justin Suchoski
(Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) played a dangerous ball into
the middle of St. Mary's penalty area where junior
Jon Ports (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) pressured the
Seahawk defense into an errant clearance. Good collected several
yards outside the 18-yard box, before striking a low boring shot
that ran along St. Mary's Bermuda grass field and into the
back of the Seahawk net.
Despite tallying just once in the match, the
Spartans controlled play throughout the 90 minutes of action. The
windy conditions and the brilliant play of Seahawk goalkeeper Dan
Gressang conspired against the green and white's offense.
Gressang made several spectacular stops to keep the Seahawks in the
entire 90 minutes.
Sophomore defender Trey Good (Narvon,
Pa./Pequea Valley) looked as if he added to the Spartans
1-0 advantage in the 66th-minute. After freshman forward
Kemal Nuspahic (East Petersburg, Pa./Warwick)
forced Gressang to make a save on his shot, Trey Good's
ensuing attempt was cleared off the line by a St. Mary's
defender to preserve the 1-0 score line.
The Spartans would effectively run out the
remainder of the clock to secure the 1-0 victory. The clean sheet
is York's third shutout in a row and fifth in the past six
matches.
For the match, the York side owned a 22-5 bulge
in shots and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Kyle Marks (Yardley,
Pa./Pennsbury) picked up the win in the Spartan net as he
made four saves over his 90 minutes. Gressang takes the loss
despite his excellent play, making seven stops for the
Seahawks.
York concludes their 2008 regular season on
Wednesday, October 29, when they travel to Hood College. The CAC
tilt kicks off from Frederick, Md. at 4:00 pm.
