GETTYSBURG, PA – Jill
Stanley's (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale)
95th-minute left-footed strike lifted the York College
women's soccer to a 1-0 non-conference overtime victory at
Gettysburg Wednesday evening, the Spartans' fifth straight win.
Stanley's team-leading ninth goal of the year pushes
York's record to 9-4-1 while the Bullets drop to 3-5-4 on the
season.
Nearly four minutes into the first overtime period, sophomore
Ali Jones (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding)
collected the ball and streaked up the right touchline. Jones
served a brilliant driven cross into the Gettysburg 18-yard box
where the service skipped, bounced off a Bullet defender and found
the left-foot of Stanley. The All-CAC performer promptly tucked
home the game-winner inside the left post.
Gettysburg had their best opportunity of the match just three
minutes into overtime. After a Bullet corner kick came through the
Spartan penalty box, Gettysburg played the subsequent ball back
into the middle of the box. An opportunistic attacker knocked her
shot toward right-side netting. Fortunately for the Spartans,
senior defender Caitlin Allen (Langhorne, Pa./Council Rock
South), who placed herself on the post for the corner
kick, cleared the attempt off the line to preserve the 0-0 score
line.
Throughout much of the 90 minutes of regulations, the Spartans
controlled the pace of play but were simply unable to score. York
looked to get on the board in the 28th minute when sophomore
Allie Jensen (Parkville, Md./Parkville) ripped a
shot from the left side of the box. Gettysburg goalkeeper Danielle
St. Pierre made a fantastic one-handed diving save to her left to
keep the green and white at bay until Stanley's overtime
heroics.
York led 11-9 in shots for the game, and took a 6-3 advantage in
corner kicks.
On the season, the Spartans have played in five overtime matches
and sport a record of 3-1-1 in those games.
Desiree Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton)
picks up the win in the Spartan net, collecting four saves in her
94:49 of work. St. Pierre notched three stops for the Gettysburg
side.
The Spartans travel to St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday,
October 18, for a key league match. The CAC tilt is slated for 3:00
pm.
