LYNCHBURG, VA-The York College field hockey squad began
their weekend two-game road trip with a 4-1 loss at
Lynchburg College on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg, VA. Th
Spartans fall to 7-9 overall while the Hornets improve to 10-5 for
the 2008 campaign.
The first half was a scoreless stanza as the
Hornets held a 12-5 advantage in shots while both teams had four
penalty corners.
The second half would provide all the scoring
in the game. The Hornets opened the scoring 52 seconds into second
half as Erin Funkhouser fed Caitlin Gibb off a penalty corner for
the tally. The goal was Gibb's sixth of the year. The Hornets
pushed the lead to 2-0 less than four minutes later as Funkhouser
got the goal off a pass from Signey Milks for Funkhouser's
eighth goal of the year.
The Spartans got on the board in the 48th
minute as senior captain Casey Knauss (St. Michael's,
Md./Easton) fed fellow senior captain April
McFarland (York, Pa./Eastern York) for McFarland's
14th goal of the year. Those 14 goals ties McFarland with junior
Megan Spangler (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon
County) for tops on the Spartan squad.
The Hornets pushed their lead back to two goals
10:02 after McFarland's goal as Funkhouser recorded her
second goal of the game, this one coming off a pass from Allie Weir
with 12:11 remaining in regulation. Weir concluded the scoring 1:59
after Funkhouser's second goal as she recorded an unassisted
goal which was her 22nd for the campaign.
The Spartans would get two more shots over the
final nine minutes of play but that would not be enough as the
Spartans as they drop to 0-6 on the road this year.
Lynchburg held a 27-11 bulge in total shots
including a 21-7 margin in shots on goal. The Hornets finished the
game with a 12-6 edge in penalty corners.
Spartan goalie Claire Rekitzke
(Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) recorded 17 saves in the
loss as her record is now 7-9. Sarah Cates recorded five saves in
goal for Lynchburg.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday
afternoon when they travel to Catholic to complete their weekend
road trip. Game time in Washington, DC is set for 1:00 pm.
