ST. MARY'S CITY, MD-The York College field hockey squad
couldn't make it two in a row on Saturday as St. Mary's
College blanked the Spartans 2-0 in Capital
Athletic Conference action in St. Mary's
City, MD. The Seahawks improve to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the
CAC while the Spartans fall to 4-9 overall and 2-4 in the
conference.
The Seahawks tallied the game's opening goal just 15
minutes into the contest. Marianne Wood put home her sixth goal of
the year as she notched an unassisted tally for St. Mary's.
The Seahawks outshot the Spartans 7-1 in the first half but Spartan
goalie Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) kept it a one
goal game at the break.
Wood struck again eight minutes into the second half as she
assisted on the Seahawks' second goal, feeding Mary Lyle
Jeanes for the goal, her fourth of the year. The Spartans were
better offensively in the second half as they managed to squeeze
off seven shots. Unfortunately for the green and white, Seahawk
goalie Emily Richards kept the Spartans off the board.
St. Mary's finished the contest with a 15-8 edge in shots
while the Spartans had 13 penalty corners to just five for the
hosts.
Rekitzke finished the game with six saves while Richards was
credited with two stops.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday when they host
Gwynedd-Mercy in a non-conference contest from Kinsley Field in
York. Game time is set for 4:30 pm.
