YORK, PA - The York College men's soccer team took their
first loss in over two years, dropping a 1-0 decision to visiting
Salisbury University in Saturday's Capital Athletic
Conference match. The Sea Gulls (6-3-1, 2-0 CAC) hand the
Spartans (9-1, 2-1 CAC) their first loss of 2007 and snap
York's 49 game unbeaten streak. Salisbury also defeated
the Spartans on September 17, 2005, York's last loss before
the streak began.
The game's only score came in the 79th minute when
Salisbury's Kyle Sterling collected the ball inside the box
and promptly slotted his shot inside the far post.
Sterling's team-leading fifth goal of the campaign proved to
be the game-winner for the visitors. York attempted a late
push for the equalizer, but was unable to record a shot in the
final ten minutes.
The Spartans looked like they were going to take the lead merely
three minutes before Sterling's goal. After a Salisbury
foul granted the Spartans a free kick in their offensive third, a
Mike Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa. / LaSalle) header
seemed destined for the back of the net. Unfortunatley for
the home squad, Sea Gull goalkeeper Greg Wellinghoff made a
sprawling catch to keep York scoreless.
Neither team looked particularly sharp on afternoon, as both
sides battled for every possession. York did have the better
of the opportunities, tallying seven shots to Salisbury's
five, but could only manage one attempt in the second half.
Salisbury took a slight edge in corner kicks, 3-1. The game
was a bit chippy as 47 fouls were assessed during the 90 minutes.
Spartan goalkeeper Kyle Marks (Yardley, Pa. /
Pennsbury) takes the loss in net for the green and
white. The junior did not record a save as Salisbury's
only shot on goal found paydirt. Wellinghoff registered three
stops to preserve the clean sheet for the Sea Gulls.
During their unbeaten streak, the Spartans posted a 44-0-5
record. The loss also breaks York's 16 game CAC winning
streak. The green and white look to get back into the win
column as they take to the field on Monday, Oct. 1 against
Gallaudet. The CAC tilt is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start at
York's Graham Field.
