YORK, PA-The York College field hockey team continued their
recent struggles as #5 Salisbury University downed the Spartans 6-1
in Capital Athletic Conference action on a balmy Saturday
afternoon in York. The Sea Gulls, who are ranked fifth in the
nation, improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the CAC. The Spartans,
losers of three straight, fall to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in the
conference.
Lauren Correll opened the scoring with a goal just 8:33 into the
game as she scored off a pass from Kandice Hancock. Correll quickly
made it 2-0 when she picked up an unassisted goal just 1:12 after
her first as the Gulls surged to the lead.
Danielle Twilley converted a penalty stroke with 24:18 remaining
in the first half as Salisbury's lead grew to 3-0. Lauren
Dietz closed out the first half scoring with her first goal of the
season, an unassisted tally, with 21:01 left in the stanza.
The Gulls dominated the first half statistically as they outshot
York 22-0 while they also held a 6-0 bulge in penalty corners.
The second half was much of the same for YCP as Dietz
picked up her second goal of the day just 2:32 after the break.
Abby Tedford completed Salisbury's scoring with her second
goal of the year with 29:01 remaining in the game.
The Spartans avoided the shutout as they got a goal from junior
Laurel Sturner (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill
West). The defender got her first career goal off a pass
from Jami Hassler (Derwood, Md./Magruder) with
14:05 left in the game.
The Sea Gulls finished the game holding a huge 34-5 bulge in
total shots and a 17-1 margin in shots on goal. The Sea Gulls also
finished the game with 10 penalty corners to just three for York.
Spartan keeper Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford
Senior) finished the game with 11 saves while Maria
Ramoundos picked up the win for Salisbury with her 49:06 of shutout
work. Claire Davey-Karlson allowed the Spartan goal as she played
the final 20:54 of the game.
York returns to action on Tuesday as they travel to Wesley
College for a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time
is set for 4:30 pm.
