YORK, PA-The York College field hockey team continued their
struggles as Juniata College handed the Spartans a 3-0 setback in
non-conference action on Thursday afternoon in York. The Spartans
have lost two straight and six of their last eight as they fall to
3-6 overall. The Eagles, who are ranked 15th in the nation, improve
to 6-1 overall as their win streak grows to six.
The first half was the Paula Price show as Juniata's
freshman forward tallied three goals in the half to provide the
visitors with all the offense they would need on the day.
Price's first goal came 12:25 into the game as Erin Smith
slid a pass to Price who drove the ball past Spartan keeper
Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) for
the tally. Price struck again with 3:08 remaining in the first half
as Kim Wagner hit a brilliant cross that found Price's stick.
The freshman poked home Wagner's cross for the goal. Price
closed out the scoring with 1:24 left before the break as she
redirected a Heather Hassinger shot into the cage for the goal.
Price now has six goals on the season which leads the Eagles.
The second half saw the Spartans have a few good chances but the
green and white continued their offensive struggles. York has now
scored just two goals in their last 225:58 of play. The
Spartans' best scoring opportunity came with 12:55 left in
the second half as Megan Spangler (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern
Lebanon County) hit a shot that eluded Juniata goalie Abby
Funk but Eagle defender Amanda Wimer cleared the ball off the line
for a defensive save, preserving the shutout.
Juniata ended the game with a 19-10 bulge in shots while they
also held a 15-12 advantage in penalty corners.
Funk earned the win as she played 59:54 of the game without
allowing a goal as she made three saves. Denalyn Spratt played the
final 10:06 and was not forced to make a save.
The road for the Spartans' doesn't get any easier as
they host #5 Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon in a
Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time at
Kinsley Field is set for 1:00 pm.
