READING, PA-The York College field hockey team started off their
2007 campaign on the right foot on Sunday, defeating host Albright
3-2. Senior Jami Hassler (Derwood, Md. / Magruder)
was instrumental in the Spartan attack registering a goal and two
assists in the victory.
Albright struck first as Lindsay Neal scored off a double assist
from Jordan Toroniewski and Kelly Zepp 10:53 into the game. The
Spartans tied the game 17:19 into the game as junior April
McFarland (York, Pa. / Eastern York) scored her first goal
of the season. McFarland took a pass from Hassler and buried it in
the back of the cage, tying the game at one midway through the
first half.
Toroniewski put the Lions on top just over five minutes into the
second half as she tallied an unassisted goal at the 40:09 mark of
the game. York would not notch the equalizer until freshman
Casey Lawrence (Abbottstown, Pa. / Delone
Catholic) scored off a Hassler feed with only 3:12
remaining in regulation.
Hassler broke the tie just 40 seconds later, netting the
game-winner with 2:32 remaining in regulation. The Spartans would
hang on to post the victory.
Shots were even at 20 attempts apiece, with the Spartans gaining
a slight edge in penalty corners 9-5.
Spartan sophomoe netminder Claire Rekitzke (Seaford,
Del. / Seaford Senior) went the distance in net for the
green and white notching eight saves on the day. Albright
goalkeeper Rachel Hager kept her team in the game with 13 stops.
York returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 4 when they travel to
McDaniel for their 4:30 match against the Green Terror.
