YORK, PA- On a picture-perfect late-summer evening, the York
College women's soccer team battled visiting
Elizabethtown to a 0-0 draw. The scoreless tie leaves
the Spartans with a 5-2-1 record (2-0 CAC) while Elizabethtown sits
at 5-1-1 for the season.
Back-and-forth play was the theme of the match as both teams had
numerous opportunities on goal. Even with all theses chances,
neither side was able to break through. At the half, both
teams had registered five shots apiece. Spartan goalkeeper
Meagan Cahill (Arundel, Md. / Crofton) came up
with three saves in the period, while her counterpart Angela
Freeland also turned away three attempts.
Coming out an inspired group, York controlled play in the
opening minutes of the second stanza recording three shots and two
corners within ten minutes. Unfortunately for the green and
white, Freeland and the Blue Jay defense never broke and the score
remained at zero.
Both sides created dangerous chances throughout the rest of the
half including Elizabethtown's Jenna Russo rattling the
crossbar in the 59th minute. Erin Scott's 60th minute attempt
appeared destined for the back of the Spartan net but rung off the
far left post. In a frantic push for the game-winning tally,
the Blue Jays heavily pressured the Spartan backline in the final
five minutes. The intense offensive pressure left the door
open for a York counter-attack and with under ten seconds remaining
Emily Sullivan (Bowie, Md. / Archbishop Spalding)
was able to get behind the Elizabethtown defense. There would
be overtime however, as Sullivan's shot sailed outside the
left post.
In the two overtime periods, the Blue Jays recorded the only two
attempts at net.
For the game, the Spartans tallied eleven shots and eight corner
kicks. Elizabethtown registered 16 shots but could only
manage five corners.
Cahill and Freeland played well in net earning the clean sheets
with eight and six saves respectively.
The Spartans travel to Mary Washington on Saturday for their
third CAC match of the year. Game time is set for 1:00
pm.
