YORK, PA-With the wind whipping around York College's
Graham Field, the Spartan men's soccer team extended their
unbeaten streak to 46 games with a 5-2 victory over Christopher
Newport University on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Spartans, who are ranked #1 in the nation according to
d3kicks.com, improve to 6-0 overall while the Captains fall to 2-3.
The game was played in a consistent wind as gusts reached as
high as 25 miles per hour during the game. Early on, the guests
used the wind advantage and carried the opening 25 minutes of play.
The Captains fired two of their three first half shots in the first
ten minutes of the game but CNU would be unable to find the mark.
York started to regain the momentum late in the half as more of the
action took place in Newport's defensive half. That momentum
would result in a goal with just 1:20 remaining in the stanza as
senior Andrew Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco)
struck an absolute beautiful cross that found the head of sophomore
Justin Suchoski (Langhorne, Pa. /Neshaminy) who
promptly headed the ball home for the opening goal. The tally is
Suchoski's first of the season.
The Spartans struck again when Wheeler created a great chance
for junior Kurt Lane (Cochranville, Pa./Octorara)
who converted the opportunity in the 63rd minute. York received a
gift goal just over a minute later as CNU goalie Matt Tengs had a
ball handling error. Tengs collected a ball the Spartans played
into him but he dropped the ball directly in front of Jason
Yarnall (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser). Yarnall responded
by tapping the ball across the end line for his first goal of the
year.
The Captains trimmed the Spartan lead to 3-1 in the 65th minute
as Tyler Clare collected a loose ball on a breakaway. He fed Brock
Hughes who put the ball on target. A Spartan defender appeared to
clear the ball off the line but the side official ruled it crossed
the line for the goal. The goal was the first non-penalty kick goal
of the year against the green and white.
Wheeler then took over and scored a pair of goals in 40 seconds
to put the game out of reach. Wheeler finished the game with two
goals and two assists for YCP.
The Captains got a cosmetic goal with 16 seconds left in
regulation as Michael Caro beat a pair of reserve Spartan defenders
and slid a shot between Spartan goalie Kyle Marks (Yardley,
Pa. /Pennsbury) and the left post. The goal was
Caro's team-leading fifth of the season.
York finished the game holding a 13-7 edge in total shots while
Christopher Newport had the better of the corner kicks, 6-4.
Marks earned the win as he notched two saves in 90 minutes of
action. Tengs recorded four saves for the Captains.
The Spartans return to action Monday as they host Hood in
York's 2007 Capital Athletic Conference opener. Game time at
Graham Field is set for 4:00 pm.
