The York College men's soccer team started the season
with a bang on Saturday as the second-ranked Spartans defeated the
visiting Albright College Lions 7-0. Spreading out the
wealth, five different Spartans recorded goals on the day.
Andrew Wheeler (Baltimore, Md. / Patapsco) put the green and
white out in front in the ninth minute of action, recording his
first goal of the young season. After receiving a beautiful
pass from Travis Williams (Springfield, Pa. / Springfield
Township), the All-American sped past the Lion defense slotting the
ball inside the far left post.
In the 22nd minute of play, Kurt Lane (Cochranville, Pa. /
Octorara) and Jason Mancuso (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River North)
combined inside the penalty box to extend the Spartan lead to
two. Lane took the ball, entered the box and slipped a
brilliant pass to the open Mancuso who promptly beat the goalkeeper
to the far right corner.
Keeping the pressure on the Lions, York scored their third
goal in the 24th minute. After Jon Ports' (Baltimore,
Md. / McDonogh) corner kick, Mancuso was able to find the head of
Mike Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa. / LaSalle). Whalen's
tally gave the green and white a 3-0 lead at the break.
Whalen was able to find the back of the net yet again in the
50th minute. Jason Yarnall (Robesonia, Pa. / Conrad Weiser)
ripped a strike off the left post which caromed back inside the
goal mouth where Whalen finished. York's fourth goal of
the match was Whalen's second of season. The junior
defender doubled his season scoring after recording just one tally,
an overtime game-winner against Albright, during the 2006
season.
Not to be outdone, Wheeler got his name back in the scorebook
in the 74th minute. After a great run down the right flank by
Justin Suchoski (Langhorne, Pa. / Neshaminy), Wheeler collected the
ball after a defensive miscue and recorded his second goal of the
match.
The Spartan onslaught continued as Van Hare (Hanover, Pa. /
Southwestern) recorded his first career goal in the 83rd
minute. Following a save from Albright's keeper, the
rebound came directly across the goal where the oncoming Hare was
able to sneak in and finish.
Completing the Spartan scoring for the day, Javier Perez
(Dover, N.J. / Morris Catholic) notched his first collegiate goal
with only a minute left to play. A deflected ball found the
feet of the waiting Perez who was in the right place at the right
time. The midfielder hit a solid strike that hit the far
right corner of the Lion net.
York controlled play throughout the match recording 25 shots,
13 on target, as well as 11 corner kicks.
Continuing their stellear performance, the Spartan defense
only allowed Albright two shots and four corner kicks throughout
the game. The clean sheet increases York's shutout
streak to 945 consecutive minutes.
Kyle Marks (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury), Ryan Hock (Brookeville,
Md. / Sherwood), and Kyle Brooten (Gladstone, N.J. / Bernards)
combined in the Spartan net for the shutout. The three
keepers did not record a save on the day as the Lions were unable
to put a shot on goal.
Joe Hartman and Wendell Hannaford shared the goalkeeping
duties for the Lions. Hartman recorded four saves as
Hannaford turned away three Spartan attempts.
The green and white return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 5
when they host Gettysburg College in their 4:00 pm matchup.
