YORK, PA - The York College men's soccer team advanced to
the semifinal round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament
Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over Marymount
University. On senior day, the Spartans improve to 18-1 while
the Saints end their season going 8-10 for the campaign.
Marymount jumped out in front early, tallying only 4:35 into the
game. Saint midfielder Chris Tipton put his squad on the
board first, knocking his lone shot of the match into the York
net. Tipton collected the ball inside the Spartan box and
neatly finished to left side netting.
Down 1-0, the York side seemed to “wake-up” and
slowly started taking control of the match.
In the 24th minute of action, Jon Ports (Baltimore,
Md./McDonogh) gathered the ball and made a dashing run
inside the box from the right side of the pitch. After
beating one defender and heading towards goal, Ports was tripped up
from behind resulting in a penalty-kick. The sophomore calmly
stepped to the spot and buried his 15th goal of the season.
Drawing even at one goal apiece, York was finally able to settle
into the match.
Concluding the first stanza in fine fashion, Lucas Emil
(Parsippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) registered the second
goal of his rookie campaign to give the Spartans the 2-1
advantage. A foul just outside Saint penalty box provided
Emil with a great scoring opportunity that the freshman could not
pass up. Emil hit a beautiful free kick that curled from
right to left and finally tucked inside the near post. The
Spartans went into the halftime break with the 2-1 lead.
Just over five minutes into the second frame, York scored their
third and final goal of the afternoon as Ports combined with
Justin Suchoski (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy).
Approximately 25 yards out, Ports slipped a nifty through ball to
an on running Suchoski. The midfielder deftly slotted the
ball to the left of the on coming goalkeeper and into the Saint
net. Suchoski's tally gives the sophomore three scores
in 2007 while Ports now has a team-leading 12 assists.
York controlled play throughout much of the second half not
allowing the Saints to mount any serious threat. The two-goal
lead allowed Coach Mark Ludwig to honor all eight Spartan seniors
by taking them off the field together with just over ten minutes to
play.
Kyle Marks (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) earns the
win in net for the Spartans as he registered one save in nearly 76
minutes of work. Ryan Hock (Brookeville,
Md./Sherwood) finished off the final 14:15 also recording
one save. William Brahmstedt performed admirably in the Saint
net turning away seven Spartan attempts.
For the match, York held a 26-5 bulge in shots and a 12-2
advantage in corners.
The Spartans continue their CAC tournament on Tuesday.
York is slated to host Villa Julie who earned their way into the
