YORK, PA - The York College women's soccer team concluded their
2007 regular season with a 1-1 draw with visiting Catholic
University. The tie moves the Spartans' record to 10-5-3 (6-1
CAC) on the season, while the Cardinals now sport a record of
9-2-4.
After an uneventful first half of play, both sides went into the
break scoreless. York led 5-3 in shots while Catholic held a
3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Coming out an inspired group, the green and white controlled
much of the play during the second 45 minutes. It looked as
if the Spartans would take the 1-0 lead in the 74th
minute of action when Caitlin Allen
(Langhorne,
Pa./Council Rock) hit a strike
that flew towards the Cardinal net. Goalkeeper Tere Rossi,
who played extremely well throughout the match, made a diving save
to her right knocking the ball away from danger and keeping the
Spartans off the board.
With only 1:44 left in regulation, York finally broke through
for the game's first tally. An errant Catholic goal kick
allowed Jill Stanley
(Stewartstown,
Pa./Stewartstown) to collect the
ball just outside the penalty box. The junior forward
dribbled to the goal and beat Rossi for her sixth goal of the
season, putting the Spartans up 1-0.
Unfortunately for the home squad, Catholic made one last charge
in a desperate attempt to tie the score. A Cardinal corner
kick with less than 30 seconds to play bounced out to Rossi who had
pushed up to mid-field. Rossi quickly played the ball back
into Catholic's attacking third where she found an awaiting Sara
Cooke. The senior forward received the pass and promptly
recorded the equalizer sending the match into overtime.
The Spartans had several opportunities to secure the victory in
the pair of extra frames but were simply unable to finish.
For the match, York owned a 22-5 bulge in shots including a 14-1
advantage in the second stanza. Corner kicks also went in
favor of the Spartans, 10-4.
Meagan Cahill (Crofton, Md./Arundel) made two
saves in her 110 minutes of work. Rossi notched nine stops
and snuffed out numerous Spartan attacks to keep her squad in the
match.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday to host the first round
of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. York currently
holds the second seed in the conference playoffs. The
opponent and game time will be announced later in the week.
