ST. DAVID'S, PA-The York College women's soccer
squad had their four game unbeaten streak snapped with a 2-1
overtime loss to Eastern University on Monday in St. David's,
PA. The Eagles improve to 15-3 overall with the win while the
Spartans fall to 10-5-2 with the setback.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the 29th minute as Jill DiRenzo
scored on a free position shot outside the 18, putting the hosts up
1-0. The goal was DiRenzo's team-leading 21st tally of the
year.
York tied the match in the 49th minute as senior Emily
Sullivan (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) found junior
Jill Stanley (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) for
the Spartan goal. The tally was Stanley's fifth of the year.
The Spartans played very well in the second half as they applied
heavy pressure on Eastern keeper Amanda Daveler. Daveler responded
by making three second half saves on 10 Spartan shots. The
green and white had a chance to win the game late as they took a
corner kick that was headed into the goal by junior defender
Kali Macgregor (Rockville, Md./Academy of the Holy
Cross). Unfortunately for the Spartans, the horn blew as
Macgregor was making contact with the ball and the goal was called
off.
The Eagles wasted litte time in recording the game winner as
Kristin Watson scored just 1:27 into the overtime. Watson's
goal came off a pass from Corie Brant and just snuck over the line
for the game-winner.
The Spartans finished the game with a 12-10 edge in total shots
while the Eagles fashioned a 9-3 bulge in corner kicks.
Amber Cummins earned the win in goal as she played the 1:27 of
overtime. She did not face a shot as she improves to 4-1. Daveler
played the first 90 minutes for the Eagles as she registered four.
Meagan Cahill (Crofton, Md./Arundel) notched two saves for the
Spartans as she falls to 7-3-2.
The Spartans close out the regular season on Wednesday
afternoon when they host Catholic University in a non-conference
contest. Kick off is set for 4:00 pm at Graham Field.
