OWINGS MILLS, MD-The York College women's soccer squad
closed out their 2007 Capital Athletic Conference campaign with a
2-1 overtime victory at Villa Julie College in Owings Mills,
MD. The Spartans improve to 10-4-2 overall and 7-1 in the
conference. The Mustangs fall to 8-8 overall and 3-4 in the CAC.
The Mustangs got on the board first as former Spartan Katie
Orlando fed Rose Phelan with a pass. Phelan deposited the ball in
the back of the net for the 1-0 Mustang lead. Phelan's
goal came in the 30th minute as the hosts drew first
blood. Villa Julie took the 1-0 lead to the break despite the
Spartans outshooting them 12-3.
York took little time to tie the game after the intermission.
Senior Erin Kuhn (Turnersville, N.J. /Washington
Township) found freshman standout Steph Mergler
(Street, Md./North Harford) open. Kuhn fed Mergler with a
pass that the freshman drove home for the game-tying goal just 2:54
into the half. The teams would remained tied throughout the
remaining 42:06 of regulation. York held a 12-2 edge in shots but
would be unable to get the game-winner in regulation.
The game-winner came 6:48 into the first overtime as Kuhn
drilled home her seventh goal of the season after receiving a pass
from sophomore Jackie Moser (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows
Point). The victory is the Spartans' second overtime
win of the year as York is now 2-1-2 in extra sessions this year.
Spartan keeper Meagan Cahill (Crofton,
Md./Arundel) improved to 7-2-2 with the win in goal as she
made one save. Casey Brown finished the contest with 13 saves as
she suffered the hard-luck loss as she falls to 8-7.
The Spartans finished the game outshooting the Mustangs 26-5
while they also held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
The win guarantees the Spartans at least the second seed in the
upcoming CAC tournament. The Spartans are currently a half a
game ahead of Salisbury but the Sea Gulls face Hood on Saturday.
A win by the Gulls give them an identical 7-1 mark. Salisbury
defeated the Spartans 2-1 earlier in the year so the Gulls earn the
head-to-head tiebreaker. A Salisbury loss would give the Spartans
the outright regular season title and the top seed in the
tournament.
York returns to action on Monday, October 22 when they travel to
Eastern College. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
