ARLINGTON, VA-The York College women's soccer squad earned
a 4-0 Capital Athletic Conference win at Marymount University
on Friday night in Arlington, VA. The Spartans improve to 9-4-2
overall and 5-1 in the CAC while the Saints fall to 6-7-1
overall and 1-4-1 in the league.
The Spartans opened the scoring just 47 seconds into the match
as Steph Mergler (Street, Md./North Harford) hit a
shot towards the goal. The shot looked like it would be harmless
but somehow found the back of the net for the goal, Mergler's
third of the year. The Saints kept the Spartans off the board
the remainder of the first half despite York outshooting the hosts
9-4.
The green and white built on the lead just 6:35 into the second
half as Mergler fed junior Jill Stanley
(Stewartstown, Pa. /Kennard-Dale) for a shot that
Stanley put home for her fourth goal of the season. Just under 12
minutes later, Stanley was on the giving end as she assisted on an
Erin Kuhn (Turnersville, N.J. /Washington
Township) goal in the 64th minute. The tally was her
team-leading sixth goal of the year.
York closed out the scoring in the 81st minute as Ali
Jones (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) converted a
Kali Macgregor (Rockville, Md./Academy of the Holy
Cross) pass for a goal. The goal was Jones' first
collegiate tally.
Junior Meagan Cahill (Crofton, Md./Arundel) and
freshman Desiree Halaka (Southampton,
N.Y./Southampton) combined on the shutout. Cahill played
the first 79 minutes and recorded eight saves. Halaka played the
final 11 minutes and did not face a shot. Lauren Harris absorbed
the loss for Marymount as she played 74:28, notching eight saves
while she allowed all four Spartan goals. Beth Dickey played 15:32
of the contest as she made two saves.
The Spartans held a 20-11 edge in shots and a slight 5-4
advantage in corner kicks. The game was clean with only nine fouls
and no cards.
The green and white return to action on Tuesday when they travel
to Gallaudet University to face the Bison in a conference contest.
Game time in Washington, DC is set for 4:00 pm.
