BUENA VISTA, VA – The York College women's tennis team concluded their 2019 fall campaign with a tight 5-4 win over Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon in Buena Vista, Virginia.
The win was also a Capital Athletic Conference win of the year for the Spartans. York ended their fall with a mark of 7-1 while Southern Virginia falls to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.
The Spartans found themselves down early as the Knights won two of the three doubles points. York's first doubles duo of Michaela Sentz and Gina Liguori posted an 8-6 win over Elizabeth Fuchs and Lauren Lefrandt in their match. The Knights won the second doubles match 8-4 and then captured the third doubles 8-0 as SVU took a 2-1 lead to singles play.
SVU's Morgan Blount put the Knights up 3-1 with a three-set win over Sentz in the first singles match. Liguori got the Spartans back on track with a 7-5, 6-3 second singles win over Alyssa Sewell. Maisie Supp earned a hard-fought 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 third singles win, knotting the match at three.
SVU's Audrey McBride outlasted Hannah Shinsky 2-6, 6-0, 10-7 in the fourth singles match. The Spartans closed out the match with wins in the fifth and sixth singles matches. Lauren Ostermann cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 fifth singles win while Chloe Doyle sealed the match as she won 6-0, retired in the sixth singles match.
Doyle was outstanding all fall for the Green and White as she went 7-0 in singles play. Supp went 6-1 playing out of the third singles slot while Ostermann was 5-2 in singles matches. Supp and Ostermann combined to go 5-2 as York's top doubles team in the fall.
The Spartans went 31-15 in singles play for the fall while they were 14-10 in doubles play.
The York women will resume play in March as they will kick off the spring portion of their schedule.
