Spartans Sit Fifth with Five in Quarterfinals After Day 1 of New Standard

YORK, Pa. – The York College wrestling team sits in fifth place with 28.5 points after day one of the 11th Annual New Standard Corporation Invitational as action wrapped up Friday night at the M&T Bank Field House. 16 Spartans remain in contention with five Spartans advancing to the quarterfinals and 11 competing in the consolation brackets.

Sophomore Jared Kuhns had one of the most dominant performances for the Spartans with a pair of technical falls at 125 lbs. to open his tournament. He defeated Ben Dubois (Roger Williams) 20-4 in his first match of the evening and finished off Neiko Scarano (Brockport) 16-0. Kuhns will face Colton Messick of Apprentice School tomorrow in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Blake Shalbert also put together a dominant performance at 141 lbs. with a fall and a major decision. He began the day with a first-period fall (0:52) over Colton Rex (Elizabethtown) to begin the day. Shalbert then scored a 12-2 victory over David Shelton to punch his ticket to the quarterfinals. Shalbert will take on No. 3 Troy Stanich from Stevens in the quarterfinals tomorrow. 

Redshirt sophomore Eric Hutchinson advanced to the quarterfinals at 157 lbs. with an injury default victory after receiving a first-round bye. Hutchinson carried a commanding lead into the third period over Cahal Donovan (Cortland) before the two wrestlers hit heads and the match was called because Donovan was unable to return to competition. Hutchinson will face Sam Tenaglia tomorrow in the quarterfinal round. 

Sophomore Billy Myers also advanced to the quarterfinals in the 174-pound bracket with a pair of victories on the day. He began the day with a first-period fall (2:35) over Roman Jellick (Cortland) before grinding out a 5-4 victory over Joe McCarthy (TCNJ) to remain in the championship bracket. Myers will take on No. 7 Jordan Wallace from Ithaca tomorrow in the quarterfinals. 

Sophomore Camden Farrow punched his ticket to the quarterfinals tomorrow in the 197-pound bracket. He began his day with a second-period fall (4:04) over Justin Acevedo (Del. Valley) before taking out Giovanni Santiago (J&W) with an 8-4 victory. Farrow will square off against Quinn Haddad of TCNJ tomorrow in the quarterfinals.

Axel Giron and Brandon Murray are also still in contention for a spot on the podium at 125 lbs. as each advanced to the consolation round of eight. York also has a pair of Spartans still alive in the 141-pound bracket in Jake McGrath and Verlensky Joachim

Timmy Sparks is York's lone representative still at 149 lbs. as he advanced to the consi round of eight tomorrow. Jesse Rocco and Nick Secor each battled back from losses to remain in contention at 165 lbs.

Ryan Doyle is still carrying the torch for York at 184 lbs. and Michael Reinhart also remains in the hunt in the 197-pound consolation bracket. Both heavyweights, Jarrell Mayo and Thomas Tabatneck, are also still in contention in the consolation bracket.

Wrestling resumes tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. beginning with quarterfinals and consolation round of eight.
