Spartans Fall to No. 14 TCNJ in Home Opener

YORK, Pa. – The York College wrestling team suffered a 31-6 setback to No. 14 TCNJ Friday night in Wolf Gym as the Spartans opened their 2019-20 home dual slate.

York 2-1

TCNJ 3-1

How It Happened

  • The Spartans drew first blood as Jared Kuhns upset ninth-ranked Nick Denora with a 7-5 victory at 125 lbs. to put York up, 3-0. Kuhns scored the first takedown of the match, 19 seconds into the bout, and then tied things up, 3-3, with an escape in the final minute of the opening period. Kuhns reversed Denora to start the second period, but then let up an escape seconds later. Denora escaped off bottom in the third period to tie the bout, 5-5, with over a minute left, but Kuhns remained composed and scored a takedown with 12 seconds left to clinch the upset victory.

  • The Lions then went on a run, winning the next three bouts to take a 12-3 lead in the dual. No. 1 Jake Giordano led the way with a technical fall at 133 lbs., as Robert Dinger scored a major decision at 141 lbs. and Nic Mele earned a 6-2 win at 149.

  • York ended TCNJ's streak as seventh-ranked Eric Hutchinson produced a 14-8 victory over Matthew Sacco at 157 lbs. Hutchinson opened the bout with a takedown in the first minute and tacked on four swipes to take a 6-0 lead at the end of one period of action. Hutchinson added another takedown in the second and one more in the third as he dominated his way to his tenth victory of the season.

  • TCNJ ended the dual on a 5-0 run, including back-to-back bonus point victories at 174 and 184. Thomas Tabatneck gave York a chance at another victory as he took Thomas Marretta into sudden victory, tied 1-1. Tabatneck was in deep on a single leg, but Marretta managed to slip out and score a takedown with just eight seconds left in the period.

Eric Hutchinson improves to 10-0 on the year, including a record of 3-0 in dual matches … Jared Kuhns remains hot after sitting out opening weekend as he is now 3-0 on the season.
