MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Spartans used a second-half comeback Saturday afternoon to defeat Hartwick, 51-46, on day one of the Montclair State Holiday Tournament in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

How It Happened
• The Spartans and Hawks ended the first quarter in a 12-12 tie as a result of a stellar free-throw shooting performance by Hartwick (6-for-7) and a pair of key three-pointers by Molly Day and Lindsay Brown. A Kayla Ferris layup ended a near four-minute Spartan scoring drought knotted up the score at 12 with 0:41 left in the first quarter.
• The Spartans trailed by as much as 11 midway through the second quarter, but they managed to tie the score at 25 with less than a minute to play in the half as Tori Geitner led the way with nine points on an 11-0 York run. The Hawks took a 28-25 lead into the locker room as they went 3-for-4 from the charity stripe in the final minute of the half.
• York managed to out-score Hartwick in each of the last two quarters to earn the victory. The Spartans took their largest lead of the game as they led 48-40 with 4:49 left in the fourth quarter when Sammie Matteo knocked down a jumper to cap a 9-2 run. The Hawks cut the deficit to two with 2:16 left to play, but York responded with four defensive stops and a steal on the final five Hartwick possessions.

Alana Bortner led York with 12 points on the day as she has now led the Spartans in scoring in three-straight games and has been the team's leading scorer in seven games this season … freshman Tori Geitner set a season-high with nine points as she finished 3-for-5 from beyond the three-point arc … Kayla Ferris led York with 11 rebounds as she has now recorded double-digit rebounds for the fourth time this season … Ferris has led the team or tied for the team lead in rebounds five times throughout the season … the Spartans attempted a season-high 36 shots from beyond the three-point line … York held Hartwick to its worst shooting performance of the season as the Hawks shot 25.4% (16-for-63), including a season-low 13.3% (2-for-15) from three-point range … York now takes a 1-0 lead in the all-time series with Hartwick.
The Spartans return to action on tomorrow in the championship game of the Montclair State Holiday Tournament. York will face the host Red Hawks at 3 p.m.
