NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The York College men's soccer squad had their 2019 campaign end as the top-seeded Christopher Newport Captains blanked the Spartans 3-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals on Wednesday night in Newport News. The Captains got an early goal in the first half and salted away the win with a pair of second half tallies.

The Captains advance to face the second-seeded Mary Washington Eagles in the conference championship game on Saturday in Newport News.

How It Happened:

• The play was back and forth early with both teams registering shots over the first 10 minutes of play. Spartan forward Zion Friday nearly got a goal in the 12th minute but a Captain defender cleared the shot off the line to keep the game scoreless. Two minutes later, the Captains got a goal off a set piece from 20 yards out as Cory Hogge bent a shot around the Spartan wall into the left side of the net for the 1-0 lead.

• Each team had a few moderate chances over the final 30 minutes of the first half but neither team found the mark as the Captains took the one goal lead to the half. York outshot the Captains 7-5 in the first half while CNU held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

• The Captains looked like they had added to the lead in the 61st minute as Justin Smith banged a shot off the crossbar. The Captains started to turn up the pressure on the Spartans. That pressure paid off in the 70th minute as Brendan Todd hit teammate Sam Dickinson with a give and go that Dickinson finished low and right for the 2-0 Captain lead.

• CNU removed all doubt about the final result of the game as cruised into the box and fired a shot high into the right side netting for his eighth goal of the year with just over two minutes left in the game.
