YORK, PA – The York College men's soccer team recorded their third straight shutout with a big 1-0 win over the University of Mary Washington on a brilliant Saturday afternoon in York. The Spartans have now won three straight with all three wins coming via the clean sheet.

How It Happened:

• The Spartans dodged a huge bullet early as the Spartans were called for a hand ball in the box, giving the Eagles a penalty kick in the 14th minute of the game. UMW's Jacob Lovinger hit the attempt that was saved by freshman keeper Josh Kappes, keeping the game scoreless.

• The Spartans had a few opportunities over the next 20 minutes of play as Barak Amige had a pair of shots on goal but Eagle netminder Ken Kurtz registered saves for UMW. The Spartans had the final chance of the half as Joey Faddoul hit the cross bar with 24 seconds left in the first half. The ball caromed away harmless as the teams headed to the break locked in the scoreless tie.

• The Eagles took the play to the Spartans as they got six corner kicks in the opening 25 minutes of the stanza. Fortunately for York, Kappes short circuited a number of those corners with his aggressive play in the box. The Spartans finally got the break they needed in the 79th minute as Ben Ahrens was whistled for a foul just over midfield. Ethan Lloyd took the free kick and hit an absolutely brilliant pass into the middle of the box. Lloyd's pass found the head of fellow captain Marc Murgo who flicked the header home for the game's lone goal.

• The Spartans did a fantastic job of killing off the final 12 minutes of the game despite the Eagles turning up the heat in the York defensive third. The Eagles had four corners over the final 10 minutes of the game but Kappes and the Spartan defense weathered the storm and gave the Spartans their third straight shutout win.
