HERSHEY, PA – The York College men's golf squad had a fantastic Thursday as they won the Elizabethtown Spring Invitational at Hershey Country Club East. In addition to the team win, senior Tyler Newton won the individual championship to cap a very successful tournament.
The Spartans dominated the tournament as they fired a team score of 290 to win the tournament by 15 shots over second place Southern Virginia. The Spartans finished six shots over par for the day.
Southern Virginia finished second with a score of 305 while McDaniel placed third at 310. Lebanon Valley was fourth at 318 while Dickinson rounded out the top five at 320. There were eight teams participating in the single day tournament.
Newton was brilliant for the day as he carded a two-under par 69 to win the medalist honors. His score tied him with Southern Virginia's Nathan Ouimette but Newton won on the match of their back-nine scores. Newton shot 33 on the inward nine while Ouimette fired a 34.
Sophomore Joel Marshall was York's fourth scorer as he shot a six-over-par 77 to record the ninth-place finish. Dylan Wyatt was York's fifth tournament participant as he shot a nine-over-par 80 to finish tied for 17th.
Newton's victory is his first of the year and the fourth of his career. He lowered his seasonal scoring average to 73.07 strokes per round. Leebrick notched his third top five finish of his stellar freshman campaign. He is now second on the team with his scoring average of 73.71 strokes per round. Fayocavitz tied his season-low with his 72. It's the fourth time this year that Fayocavitz has shot 72 in a tournament round.
The Spartans return to the Hershey Country Club on Sunday to participate in the Hershey Cup. The two-day tournament kicks off Sunday morning at 8:00 am.
