Stephen LoBianco is in his 12th season leading the Spartans' cross country and track & field programs. LoBianco was named head coach of both programs in August of 2013.
Cross Country
In his first year as head coach, LoBianco oversaw Tim Hartung's return to nationals as the senior earned his second consecutive All-American honors in cross country. He also mentored Jess Miller as she became the first women's cross country runner to earn an invitation to the Division III National Championships. The Spartan men captured their third straight CAC Championship as Hartung won his third straight individual title. The women finished second as a team as Caroline DeLany won the individual championship while Miller finished second overall.
In 2014, the Spartan men earned two in-season wins as they were victorious at the Misericordia Invite and the Rich Achtzehn Classic. York then finished third at the CAC Championships, snapping a run of three straight conference championships. The women finished third at the championships as the tandem of Miller and DeLany again led the Spartans as they finished second and third individually. Miller and DeLany finished their careers as three-time first-team All-CAC performers.
The 2015 season saw the Spartan men finish second at the CAC Championships as four Spartans earned All-CAC honors. Grant Dell finished second to lead the Spartans. On the women’s side, York placed second as junior Alicia Dillman won the individual championship. Freshman Jess Delviscio earned the CAC Rookie of the Year award as she placed fourth.
The Spartan women captured the 2016 CAC Championship as they edged Christopher Newport in Hershey. Senior Kathleen Cannon led the way with a third-place finish as she finished her career as a three-time All-CAC runner. Alanya DeBruin, Delviscio, and Stephanie Savage joined Cannon on the All-CAC first-team. LoBianco earned the women’s Coach of the Year award. On the men’s side, the Spartans finished second led by Dell as the junior finished fifth at the championships.
LoBianco was named the women's cross country Coach of the Year in 2017 en route to a second consecutive CAC championship. In 2017, LoBianco also coached the men's cross country squad to their first NCAA championship appearance in school history. LoBianco coached three members of the all-CAC team on the men's side and four members of the all-CAC team on the women's team.
The 2018 cross country season saw the Spartans capture their fourth men’s conference title in school history. York had six runners finish inside the top 16 to earn the championship. York would go on to finish ninth at the Mid-East Regional. On the women's side, the Spartans captured their third straight CAC title. York had four of the top eight finishers as LoBianco earned both the men's and women's Coach of the Year award.
The Spartans kept rolling in 2019 as the men's team earned their second straight CAC Championship in their final year in the CAC. The women had their three-year title run snapped as they placed second in their final CAC appearance. York's men finished sixth at the regionals while the women placed tenth.
After York's inaugural year in the Middle Atlantic Conference was wiped out by COVID, the Spartans finished third of 15 teams on the men's side while the women placed fourth of 17 teams.
The 2022 cross country season saw the men finish seventh at the MAC Championships at LVC. The women finished tenth of 16 teams at the championships. In 2023, the Spartan men finished fourth out of 13 teams with four All-MAC performers, while the women came in 10th ouf 14 teams at the conference championship meet.
Track and Field
During the 2013-14 indoor season, LoBianco's Spartans had a banner indoor season as four Spartans earned first team All-CAC honors as Tim Hartung was named the CAC Indoor Co-Athlete of the Year. On the women's side, four Spartans earned first team finishes while three others had runner-up performances. Hartung returned to nationals where he earned All-American honors in both the 5K and the 3K.
On the outdoor side, Hartung and Robert Doster both earned All-CAC honors as they both earned invitations to the NCAA Division III championships. Hartung picked up two more All-American finishes in the 10K and the 5K. Jenna Roberts was the Spartans' lone women’s outdoor track and field winner as she was victorious in the 3000 steeplechase.
The 2015 outdoor campaign saw the Spartans host the Capital Athletic Conference championships at Graham Field. Caroline DeLany and Jess Miller each earned first team honors at the championships while Miller also earned a second-place finish. On the men's side, Doster and Michael Stetson each won events at the championships. Doster would go on to earn his second straight NCAA Championship appearance as he qualified for nationals in the javelin.
In 2015-16, the Spartans saw Grant Dell earn a 5k win and a second in the 3k at the indoor championships as the Green and White finished fourth. During the outdoor season, Darnell Tillman won the 200-meter run and finished second in the 100. Dell won the 5k title as he swept the event for the year. On the women’s side, Alicia Dillman and Kathleen Cannon earned indoor wins. Dillman was the 10k champion while Cannon won the 5k championship.
During the 2016-17 indoor season, junior Darris Rodrigues won the pole vault for York’s lone champion. The women’s team finished third at the indoor championships. Cannon won the 5k and finished second in the 3k. The outdoor campaign saw the men get wins from Alex Smith and Rick Jones. Smith won the 3k title while Jones won the 400-hurdle championship. The women saw three Spartans earn individual victories as Alayna DeBruin, Emily Plante and Cannon were all victorious. DeBruin won the 3k steeplechase while Plante earned the 400-meter hurdle crown. Cannon won the 5k and then finished third in the 10k.
The 2017-18 indoor season saw the Spartan men finish fifth at the championships as the distance medley relay team earn York’s lone first place finish. The Spartan women also finished fifth with Jess DelViscio, DeBruin and Katie Krutz each earning second place finishes to lead York. The outdoor campaign saw York get individual championships from Smith and Dell. Smith won the 3k while Dell won the 1,500-meter run. The Spartan women also got a pair of championship wins as Anne Measley won the 400 hurdles and DeBruin won the steeplechase.
The 2018-19 indoor campaign saw the Spartan women finish fourth at the indoor championships. Sydney Fitzwater won the weight throw while Taylor Barkdoll and DelViscio also earned indoor wins. Barkdoll won the 800 meter run while DelViscio was victorious in the one mile run. The Spartan men got an individual win during the outdoor championships as Ben Linne won the 10k. DelViscio and Rachel Banchiere earned outdoor wins for the Spartans. DelViscio won the 1500-meter run while Banchiere captured the steeplechase victory.
In 2019-20, the Spartan women had a banner indoor finish as they placed second as a team. York had four winners as Barkdoll (one mile run), Julia Pena (long jump), Fitzwater (shot put), and Jordan Haberstroh (5k) all earned individual titles. Pena also earned a pair of second place finishes for York in the 60 hurdles and the pole vault. The Spartan men got an indoor win from Derek Herr as he won the 60 meter hurdles. That would be the conclusion of the season as COVID wiped out the spring outdoor season. It also put a wrap on the Spartans as members of the Capital Athletic Conference as York departed for the Middle Atlantic Conference.
After missing the 2020-21 indoor season because of COVID, the Spartans got back to action with the 2021 outdoor season which was a MAC only schedule. The men finished fifth of 15 teams at the championships. Andrew Mott won the discus on day two followed by Derek Herr winning the 400 hurdles on day three. The women finished their first MAC championship ninth overall. Pena earned a second in the 100 hurdles and third in the long jump to pace the Spartans. Hayden Divers earned York’s other runner up finish with a second in the discus.
The 2021-22 season saw Julia Pena breakout as she had a strong indoor campaign. She won the pole vault, finished second in the 60 hurdles, and fourth in the long jump. Pena carried it over to the outdoor season as she won the pole vault while she finished second in the long jump and the 100 hurdles. She earned a bid to the NCAA Championships where she finished tenth in the pole vault and 11th in the 100 hurdles. On the men’s side, Aaron Cosgrove earned the MAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year as he won the pole vault while he also finished third in the long jump and triple jump. Herr won the 400 hurdles for his second straight championship in the event.
Pena headlined a strong 2022-23 indoor performance as she was named the MAC Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year as she won the pole vault and the long jump gold while she finished second in the 60 hurdles, breaking her own school record in the process. Pena advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second straight season as she placed 11th in the pole vault and 20th in the 60 hurdles. Pena kept it rolling in the outdoor season as earned the MAC Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. She won the long jump and the pole vault while she finished second in the 100 hurdles. She again advanced to the NCAA Championships where she became the Spartans first women’s All-American. Pena finished eighth in the pole vault and eighth in the 100 hurdles to earn two All-American honors.
On the men’s side, Andrew Mott broke a 69-year old MAC record in winning the discus throw at the outdoor championships. He also finished third in the shot put. Keith Chatmon earned York’s other individual win with gold in the 110 hurdles. Mott advanced to the NCAA Championships as he placed 17th in the discus at the national championships in Rochester, New York.
In 2023-24, Mott took his accomplishments to new heights as he clinched All-America status three times throughout the year. He earned first-team honors with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Indoor National Championships and then captured first-team honors with a seventh-place finish in the discus in addition to second-team honors with a ninth-place finish in the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships. Mott also collected an AARTFC indoor title for the shot put with conference titles in the shot put (indoor) and discus.
As an undergrad at Shippensburg University, he was a four-year varsity athlete in cross country and track & field. LoBianco is a 2007 graduate of Shippensburg University with a BS in Business Administration.
LoBianco lives in York with his wife Jenna and their two children.
