Spartan Men Roll to Season Opening Win at Dickinson

CARLISLE, PA – The York College men's basketball team finally got to open their 2019-20 season, four days late, and they rolled to a 90-63 win at Dickinson on Tuesday evening. 

The Spartans had their original season opener postponed last Friday at Franklin and Marshall but the Spartans showed no signs of rust in the 27 point win on Tuesday. The Spartans scored 55 points in the second half as they shot 66.7% in the half including 7-for-15 from three.

How It Happened:

• The teams went back and forth early in the game neither team had a significant edge. The Red Devils took a 17-13 lead on an Onye Okoro lay-up with 10:42 left in the first half. The Spartans responded with an 11-0 run to take a 24-17 lead. The run was highlighted by a pair of David Giuliani lay ups.

• The Red Devils responded with six straight points, cutting the York lead to one. However, the Spartans ended the half with an 11-4 run as they took a 35-27 lead to the break.

• York put the game away in the opening minutes of the second half as they began the stanza with a 19-5 run to push out to a 22-point lead (54-32) with 13:40 left in the game. The Spartan lead got trimmed to 17 on an Adam Drummond jumper with 7:01 left in the contest. The Green and White answered the call again with a 17-6 run as the lad grew to 28.

• The York lead rose to as much as 31 before the Spartans settled for the 27 point victory to open the campaign.

Notes:

The Spartans improve to 6-2 in season openers under head coach Matt Hunter … York has won five straight season-openers including the last two straight against Dickinson … the Spartans now lead the all-time series against Dickinson 13-8 as York has won four straight in the series … senior Jared Wagner led the Spartans with 18 points as he is now nine points short of 1,000 for his career … freshman Logan Collins had a banner Spartan debut with 14 points and seven rebounds  … Collins was 5-for-7 from the floor including 2-for-2 from three and 2-for-3 at the line … the Spartans played their entire roster in the win with freshman Matt Faller, Kyle Koob, Bryce Hill, Tristan Kent, Avery Hinz and Collins making their Spartan debuts.

 

Up Next

The Spartans travel to Roanoke College for the Dick Leftwich Tip Off Tournament. The Spartans will face Johson & Wales in the tournament's opening round. Tip time in Roanoke is set for 8:00 pm. The host Maroons host Goucher in the tournament's first semifinal.
