FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College field hockey squad got back to their winning ways with a big 4-2 road victory at the University of Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference play. The Spartans improve to 2-0 in the league with three conference games remaining in the regular season.

How It Happened:
• The Spartans opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Hannah Huffman fired a shot on goal that was saved by Eagle goalie Jillian Lawrence. Huffman collected the rebound and banged home a second shot that Lawrence couldn't stop to give York the early lead. The goal was Huffman's sixth of the year.
• The Green and White added to the lead in the second quarter of play. York had a flurry of shots starting with a Dana Meehling shot that was saved by Lawrence. Abby Piotrowski followed that with a shot of her own on the rebound but that too was saved by Lawrence. York got a third shot shortly after as Meghan Heary hit the post. Piotrowski followed Heary's shot with a shot and goal as the Spartans finally put one home to take a 2-0 lead with 3:30 left in the half. The Spartans outshot the Eagles 7-1 in the second quarter but York was only able to put one of those shots home.
• The Eagles cut the Spartan lead in half as Lauren Hopkins scored 3:05 into the third quarter. York responded near the end of the quarter as Piotrowski got her second goal of the day off another rebound. This time Meehling fired a shot that was saved by Lawrence only to have Piotrowski score off the rebound.
• The Eagles once again cut into the Spartan lead as Jess Smith found the back of the cage with 4:06 left in regulation. The Spartans answered 2:20 later as Piotrowski took a corner and hit Kristin Varilla with a pass that the fellow freshman finished her fifth goal of the year.

The Spartans is now 8-34 against the Eagles all-time but York has won three straight in the series … the match-up is the final regular season meeting between the two programs as Capital Athletic Conference opponents as the Spartans are heading to the MAC next season … the Spartans have won six of their last eight and three of their last four … York has now outscored their two CAC opponents 12-2 … freshman Abby Piotrowski notched a career-high five points on two goals and an assist … Piotrowski now leads the team in scoring with 17 points on six goals and five assists … the Spartans now have four players in double figures in points as Hannah Huffman (15 points), Dana Meehling (12 points), and Kristin Varilla (12 points) have all reached double digits … Piotrowski, Huffman and Meehling all have six goals for the Spartans … senior goalie Sam Keating improves to 5-2 since returning to the starting lineup … Keating owns a 1.13 goals against average and a .784 save percentage in her eight games played.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they head to Fredericksburg, Virginia to face the University of Mary Washington Eagles in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time at Mary Washington is set for 12:00 pm.
