Spartans Ride Big Fifth Inning to Top Diplomats

LANCASTER, PA. – The York College baseball team used a big fifth inning and rode a strong pitching performance from Josh Mann to bounce back after their first loss in ten games with a 7-4 win over Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday.

How It Happened:

• The Spartans got on the board quickly, wasting no time, as Grant Oberholtzer led the game off with a double that fell in down the right field line followed by Austin Denlinger laying down a bunt and reaching via a Diplomat error. Brandon White would drive in Oberholtzer on a single up the middle to give York the first run of the game. The Spartans would strand two runners in scoring position but still led 1-0.

• York would strand the bases loaded in the top of the fourth trying to score on a wild pitch before the Diplomats would get their offense finally going in the bottom half of the frame. After a lead-off single and a Spartan error, Dan Marano lifted a double to left field to bring in the first run for F&M. Two batters later, Will Samuel would hit his own double to left field to bring in a pair of Diplomats and they grabbed the lead 3-1. F&M would add another run on a sacrifice fly and led 4-1 after four innings.

• York would answer in the fifth in a big way. After a double by Jack Barry, Rob Acierno would reach on a Diplomat error which would bring in Barry to cut the deficit to two. After a pitching change, Jimmy Wiegers would shoot the first pitch down the left field line to bring in another Spartan run. On the second pitch after the pitching change, Justin Kilpatrick would lace a single to center as the Spartans tied the game up 4-4. After another Diplomat pitching change, Bailey Doan would single to right center to bring home Wiegers and give York the lead back 5-4 after four and half inning of play.

• After a couple scoreless inning either way, York would get some huge insurance with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. Back-to-back singles by White and Barry would bring home Denlinger who reached on a fielder's choice to extend the Spartan lead to two. York would add another run on a double steal that brought home White to put York ahead 7-4. After Josh Mann was replaced after 7.1 strong innings, Zac Stoll came in to get the five out save and did so without allowing a base runner as York was victorious 7-4 over the Diplomats.

Notes: The Spartans are now 32-12-1 all-time against Franklin & Marshall … the win snapped a three-game losing streak to the Diplomats and was the first win since April 10, 2014 over Franklin & Marshall … York broke a three-game streak of not reaching double digit hits with 13 in the win … York has had an extra base hit in all but one game this season … the four stolen bases are the second most in a game this season while the three times caught stealing are the most in a game, York had only been caught stealing once coming into this game … the Spartans are now 5-0 when holding their opponents to five runs or fewer … Josh Mann is now 3-0 in his three starts this season which leads the team … he also leads the team with 23.1 innings pitched … York now has five saves as a pitching staff on the year … Bailey Doan tied his season-high with three hits in the win … with another RBI today, Jimmy Wiegers has the team-lead with 18 RBI on the season with Brandon White right behind with 17 … they are the only two Spartans with double-digit RBI totals … York is now 3-1 on the road this year.

The Spartans are back in action tomorrow when they travel to take on Catholic University after the game was previously postponed last week. Game time is set for 3:30 pm in Washington, D.C.
