ALTOONA, PA – The York College men's tennis squad picked up their first win of the year with a 5-2 non-conference victory over Penn State Altoona on Tuesday afternoon in Altoona, PA.
The Spartans captured the doubles point before taking four of the six singles contests.
York improves to 1-1 while the Lions suffer their first loss of the year in falling to 2-1.
The Lions captured the first doubles match 7-5 to prevent the Spartans from sweeping the doubles matches but it didn't matter as the Spartans had already secured the second and third matches.
Drew Heinzelmann and
John Shatinsky posted a 6-0 third doubles win.
Parker Smith and
Chase Fronczkiewicz combined to post a 6-4 second doubles win to secure the point.
The Spartans continued to play well in singles play. The Lions got on the board in the first singles match as Nick Beard picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Heinzelmann.
Jason Lutz rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 second singles win to tie the singles matches at one.
The Lions got their second singles win in the third singles but York cruised to fifth and sixth singles win.
Ian Bartles defeated Emmett Hibbs in the fifth singles match 6-4, 7-5. Shatinsky was a 6-2, 6-1 victor in the fifth singles match over Kody Cessna.
The most competitive match of the day came in the fourth singles match as Fronczkiewicz outlasted Gabriel Lopez 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-2).
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they head to Lebanon Valley. The action is slated for a 10:00 am start in Annville, PA.
