Box Score GRANTHAM, PA – The York College men's tennis team made history as the Spartans earned their first conference championship in program history with their 4-2 win at top-seeded Messiah on Saturday in the MAC Commonwealth title tilt.
The Spartans posted two 4-2 wins in the Commonwealth tournament as York has won nine straight as they improve to 15-2 overall. Their last loss came on March 29 against Messiah, 5-2. The Falcons see their 2024-25 season come to a close with a record of 10-8. The Falcons were the defending Commonwealth champions.
The Spartans got captured the doubles point as they won two of the three doubles matches. The Falcons won the second doubles match 6-3 but York bounced back with a 6-3 win in the third doubles match as
Drew Heinzelmann and
Hayden Musser continued their late season roll. The Spartan tandem of
Parker Sanders amd
Evan Stehman captured the decisive third decision with a 6-3 win in the first doubles contest.
Musser and Heinzelmann improve to 8-0 as a duo while Sanders and Stehman are now 5-3 for the Spartans.
The Falcons tied the overall match with a Chase Wilson first singles win. The Falcons made it 2-1 with a fifth singles win as Tim Shaeffer edged Stehman 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. That would be all the Spartans would surrender.
Senior
Ben Dorsey tied the match at two with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 second singles win for the Green and White. Heinzelmann then gave the Spartans a 3-2 lead with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) third singles win over Brady Hahn. The Spartans then secured the championship as Sanders earned a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) fourth singles win.
The singles win for Dorsey is his tenth of the year while Heinzelmann improves to 11-1 in singles play. Sanders earned his seventh win of the year for the Green and White.
Musser led his sixth singles match at the time of completion as he had a 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 6-5 lead over Luke Risser.
Sanders, a freshman, was named the MAC Commonwealth Tournament MVP as he was part of clinching doubles team and closed out the match with his fourth singles victory.
For the first time in school history, the Spartans now advance to the NCAA Tournament as the field will be announced on Monday afternoon at 12:30 pm.
