Stahl Wins Title as Men’s Wrestling Opens Season at Ned McGinley

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The York men's wrestling team opened the season by finishing fourth of 12 teams at the Ned McGinley Invitational hosted by King's College on Saturday.

York nabbed one individual title while a total of five Spartans landed on the podium. Josh Stahl led the way as he placed first in the 197-pound bracket. York captured a pair of second-place finishes with Jacob DelVecchio at 125 pounds and Derek Martin at 285. A pair of Spartans captured fifth-place finishes with Vincent Paolucci at 133 pounds and Trey Parker at 285 pounds.

Stahl dominated his competition on his way to the title as he out-scored his opponents by a combined score of 57-0 with three technical falls and a major decision. He punctuated his day with two takedowns in a 9-0 victory over top-seed Grant Mathias (USMMA) who is ranked 12th in the country.

DelVecchio went 4-1 on the day with two technical falls, a fall and a decision on his way to earning a second-place spot in the 125-pound bracket. The top-seeded Spartan rolled into the title bout on four-straight wins before falling to second-seed Alexander Diaz (NYU), 15-0.

Martin posted a record of 3-1 on the afternoon with two decisions and a fall at 285 lbs. Martin posted a 3-0 upset win over second-seed Jayden Toppan (RWU) in the semifinals before closing out his day with an 11-2 loss to top-seed and third-ranked Josh Harkless (RIT) in the title bout.

Paolucci went 4-1 in the 133-pound bracket with two decisions, a fall and a technical fall. After a loss in the quarterfinals, Paolucci rebounded with a pair of wins including a 15-0 triumph over Cole Anderson (King's) in the fifth-place bout.

Parker also posted a 4-1 record on the day with a team-high three falls to go along with a technical fall. The Spartan bounced back from a quarterfinal round loss with three-straight wins capped by a first-period fall (0:52) over Noah Berlin-Langston (Stevens) in the fifth-place match.

Several other Spartans put together strong performances, but narrowly missed out on a podium spot which included: Steven Enamorado-Ortiz (5-1 at 165 lbs.), Loan Barkey (3-2 at 133 lbs.), Ryan Brown (3-2 at 141 lbs.), David Vacca (3-2 at 149 lbs.) and Frank Gulli (3-2 at 157 lbs.)

York will return to the mats on Friday for their third annual dual match with Millersville outside on the infield of Cooper Park.
