OWINGS MILLS, MD – The York College men's tennis team had their 2023-24 season come to a close on Wednesday afternoon as they fell to Stevenson University 5-4 in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament semifinals.
The Mustangs advance to the MAC Championship game where they will face top seeded Messiah for the title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Stevenson improves to 7-8 while the Spartans end the campaign with a mark of 4-11.
The Spartans got off to a good start in the doubles matches.
Emmet Larson and
Ian Bartles combined to post an 8-4 win to put York on top 1-0. The Mustangs tied the match with an 8-5 first singles win but York captured the second doubles match as
Evan Stehman and
Hayden Musser teamed up for the 8-5 win.
York opened the singles portion of the match with a 6-2, 6-0 second singles win from
Jason Lutz over Sathwik Madasi to put York up 3-1. The Mustangs got the next point as Garrett Warren earned a 6-2, 6-1 fifth singles win over Larson. York went up 4-2 after Bartles recorded a 6-2, 6-4 sixth singles win over Stevenson's Dominic Duncan. The Mustangs tied the match with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 first singles win from Larry Johnson over
Ben Dorsey. The Mustangs closed out the match with a dramatic 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 win from Simeon Smith over Stehman.
Lutz finished the year as York's top singles player as he was 10-5 as he finished the season on a seven-match win streak. Lutz was the only singles player with a winning record in 2023-24. Â Larson and Bartles went 7-7 as a doubles tandem and were the only Spartan doubles team to be .500.
The Spartans are slated to return their entire lineup for the 2024-25 campaign which will kick off in September of 2024.
