Stahl Places First to Lead Men’s Wrestling at Ned McGinley

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Spartan men's wrestling team opened the season by finishing eighth out of 15 teams with three place winners at the Ned McGinley Invitational hosted by King's College on Saturday.

Senior Josh Stahl led the group of Spartan place winners as he placed first in the 174-pound bracket. The eighth-seeded Spartan went 5-0 on the day with three falls, a technical fall and a decision. After starting the day with a pair of falls under 30 seconds, Stahl upset top-seed Jayden Curley (RWU) with an 18-1 technical fall in the quarterfinals. Stahl notched another first-period fall over Jake Long (Castleton) in the semifinals before ending the day with a 6-3 victory over seventh-seed Gage LaPlante (Army) to claim the 174-pound title.

Stahl is now 8-4 for his career with the Green and White as he has had his first two seasons cut short to injury. He is also a two-time Ned McGinley place winner after finishing sixth two seasons ago.

Sophomore Jacob Kresicki claimed sixth place at 125 pounds after posting a record of 4-2 on the day with a pair of falls. The sixth-seed Spartan notched back-to-back falls to start the day before dropping a 4-2 decision to fifth-seed Thomas Fischer (NYU) in the quarterfinals. Kresicki battled his way back with two more wins before ending the day with a 16-5 loss to Jacob Deysher (RIT) in the fifth-place bout.

Sophomore Frank Gulli went 5-2 and captured sixth place at 157 lbs. in his debut with the Green and White. After falling to sixth-seed Kellen Smith (Army) in his second match of the day, Gulli ripped off four-straight wins, including a technical fall and a fall, to secure a spot in the fifth-place bout. The Spartan ended the day with a nail-biting loss, 8-7, to Cannon Long (Shenandoah) to take sixth.

The Spartans return to the mat on Wednesday in a dual at Millersville outdoors at Cooper park. The match is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
