Spartan Men’s Wrestling Opens Season Outdoors at Millersville

First-ever outdoor event for both the Spartan and Marauder wrestling programs

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The York men's wrestling team opened the season Thursday afternoon with a 35-6 loss outdoors to Millersville as the two teams grappled at Cooper Park, home to the Marauder baseball team. The event marked the first-ever outdoor dual in the history of the two wrestling programs.

Millersville won eight of the 10 bouts with bonus points in six of those wins. Senior Bryan Diaz (141 lbs.) and junior Josh Stahl (165 lbs.) claimed victories for the Spartans.

How It Happened
  • Millersville opened up a 9-0 lead after two bouts, highlighted by a first-period fall by two-time All-American Devin Flannery at 133 lbs.
  • Bryan Diaz put York on the board with his 8-3 victory over Aidan Micheli at 141 lbs. Diaz surrendered a first-period takedown, but battled his way back with a big third period effort in which he scored a takedown of his own and tacked on four near fall points to seal the win.
  • Jared Bair, York's lone nationally-ranked wrestler, put up a strong fight against Eilijah Tuckey, but ultimately lost by decision, 5-4, at 157 lbs. Tuckey scored the first points of the bout with a reversal in the second period, but Bair countered with an escape as the Spartan trailed 2-1 at the end of five minutes of wrestling. Bair managed to get to his feet and tie the match, 2-2, early in the third, but Tuckey scored a big takedown to gain a three-point advantage. Bair made a late push at a comeback as he scored a reversal, but failed to get a tilt as Tuckey prevailed with a one-point win.
  • Josh Stahl scored York's second victory of the day with late heroics over Brandon Connor at 165 lbs. Stahl scored the first points of the bout with an escape in the second, but Connor matched Stahl with an escape of his own early in the third. With time winding down in the third, Stahl managed to get in deep on a shot and secured the takedown with seconds left to pull off the 4-1 victory.
  • Staring up at a 17-3 deficit with four bouts to go, the Spartans mathematically still had a chance at a colossal comeback, but the Marauders emphatically took away all comeback hopes as they ended the match with four-straight bonus-points wins.
