Women's Tennis Opens Campaign at MAC Individual Championships

Brianna Rohrer advances to fourth singles championship

WILKES-BARRE, PA – The York College women's tennis team opened up their 2022-23 season with a trip to Wilkes-Barre, PA to participate in the 2022 Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships over the weekend.
Graduate student Brianna Rohrer had the Spartans' best showing as she advanced to the final of the fourth singles flight. York had three players advance to the singles semifinals while two of the three doubles squads advanced to the semifinal round.
 
First Singles
Spartan junior standout Elsa Oestermarker was seeded fourth in the tournament draw. She opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Grace Hope Stevens from Eastern. Oestermarker then downed Arcadia's Savannah Falk 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the tournament semifinals. There, she fell to top seeded Brianna Pizzano from Misericordia, 6-2, 6-2.
 
Second Singles
Freshman Hannah Sult faced third seeded Tea Amerise from Wilkes in her opening match. Amerise earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Sult to advance to the quarterfinals.
 
Third Singles
Freshman Bri Serruto opened her tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Stevenson's Kera Skove in the first round. Serruto then ran into second-seeded Lydia Barbour from Misericordia. Barbour earned a trip to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Serruto.
 
Fourth Singles
Graduate student Brianna Rohrer entered the tournament as the fourth seed at fourth singles. She began the tournament by outlasting Hope Hoppe of DeSales, 6-4, 7-5. Rohrer then advanced to the semifinals with a walkover win over Albright's Macie Littleton. Rohrer then faced top-seeded Hailey Loughlin from Miseriordia. Rohrer dropped the first set 6-0 but roared back to win 7-5, 10-8, advancing to the fourth singles championship. Rohrer then fell to second-seeded Emma Eguia from Stevens, 6-1, 6-0 in the championship as she was the fourth singles runner-up.
 
Fifth Singles
Senior Morrissey Walsh got a bye to the quarterfinals as the number three seed in the flight. She advanced to the semifinals courtesy of a 6-2, 6-1 win over Stevenson's Samantha Zudov. In the semifinals, Walsh battled Lebanon Valley's Eliana Shenk in a three set dual. Shenk outlasted Walsh 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 to advance to the championship match as she would eventually win the fifth singles title.
 
Sixth Singles
Sophomore Eleanor Beck got a bye into the quarterfinals where she then had to face third seeded Anya Sharma from Stevens. Sharma earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Beck to advance to the semifinals.
 
First Doubles
The Spartans' first doubles squad of Elsa Oestermarker and Brianna Rohrer opened their tournament with an 8-1 decision over the King's duo of Ashley Kenia and Hailey D'Amato. Oestermarker and Rohrer advanced to the semifinals with an 8-6 win over Zoe Klein and Cassidy Greenman from Wilkes. The Spartan run came to a close in the semifinals as the Misericordia duo of Brianna Pizzano and Emily Brecker, the draw's top seed, downed the
York duo 8-1.
 
Second Doubles
York's second doubles team of Hannah Sult and Bri Serruto picked up a walkover win over Hood's Lauren Sheffler and Sandy Angeh to earn a berth in the quarterfinals. The Spartans then fell to the Stevens duo of Polina Odintseva and Isabella Dona, 8-6. Odintseva and Dona were the tournament's second seed.
 
Third Doubles
The Spartans' third doubles crew of Morrissey Walsh and Eleanor Beck started their tournament in the quarterfinals with an 8-5 win over Angela Tozzi and Nicole Lee from Messiah. Walsh and Beck then saw their run come to an end with a hard-fought 9-7 loss to Madison Poladain and Meredith Haas from Lebanon Valley.
 
Up Next
The Spartans jump right back into regular season play on Monday afternoon when they host Goucher College. The match will be held at the brand-new Spartan Tennis Center on the Grumbacher Campus. The match is set for a 3:30 pm start in York.
