WILKES-BARRE, PA – The York College men's tennis team opened their 2022-23 campaign with a trip to the Middle Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Individual Championships hosted by Wilkes University on Saturday.
The tournament was shortened to one day as weather wiped out Sunday's semifinal and finals round of play. Â The tournament is a single elimination bracket.

First Doubles
The Spartans' first doubles duo of
Tej Laliwala and
Evan Stehman opened play with an 8-7 (3) win over Arcadia's Jonathan Noble and Francis Tamesis to advance to the quarterfinals. Their run would end in the quarters as Lebanon Valley's Justin Schuetz and Adam Warren downed the Spartan duo 8-5.

Second Doubles
In second doubles play,
Jack Leinbach and
Ben Dorsey rolled to an 8-1 win over Lycoming's Jason Anderson and Mohamed Ebeid to advance to the quarterfinals. Leinbach and Dorsey then ran into the FDU-Florham tandem of Ron Duval and Matt Emery and the Devils cruised to an 8-1 win to move into the semifinals.

Third Doubles
The Spartan third doubles team of
Lance Fries and
Hayden Musser had their tournament cut short by the FDU-Florham duo of Kelvin Liwag and Karanveer Saini with an 8-3 loss in the first round of the flight.

First Singles
Spartan senior
Tej Laliwala began his singles tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Albright's Arpit Gainder in the opening round. King's Logan Gregory then outlasted Laliwala 6-3, 6-7 (3), 10-8 in the quarterfinal match as he advances to face top seeded Andrew He from Stevens. That match was wiped out by Sunday's rain.

Senior
Jack Leinbach earned a walkover win over Wilkes Nathaniel Rathe to advance to the quarterfinals. There he ran into top seeded Timmy Lau of Stevens. Lau earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Leinbach to advance to the semifinals.

Sophomore
Evan Stehman had a great Saturday as he recorded a pair of easy wins. He began his tournament with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Hood's Jeffrey Fleming in the opening round. Stehman then notched a second 61-, 6-0 win as he downed King's Aidan Temple to advance to the semifinals against top seeded Philip Szkudarski from Stevens.

Sophomore
Ben Dorsey began his stay in the tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Messiah's Josh Gingerich to move to the quarterfinals. Dorsey faced DeSales' Mark Sherrill and Dorsey was forced to retire after winning the first set 6-0. Dorsey retired at 2-2 in the second set.

Junior
Lance Fries played great in his first match as he blanked Amin Ali from Wilkes, 6-0, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, King's Nick Harth edged Fries 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the semifinals.

Freshman
Grant Haffner kicked off his tournament stay with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alvernia's Ben Foster in the first round. He then fell to top seeded Troy Zhang from Stevens, 6-0, 6-0.

Seventh Singles
Sophomore
Hayden Musser played one match in the seventh singles flight as he fell to Stevens' Kyiacos Petrou 6-0, 6-1 in his opening round match.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, September 21 when they make their debut on the new Spartan Tennis Courts at the Grumbacher Center against McDaniel. The match is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
