YORK, PA – The York College men's tennis squad saw their campaign come to an end on Saturday as the Spartans fell to Alvernia 8-1 in MAC Commonwealth play in York. The game was a de-facto play in game as the teams were tied for the fourth and final Commonwealth tournament spot.
The Spartans see their season end with a record of 3-8 overall and 3-4 in the MAC Commonwealth. The Golden Wolves advance to next week's tournament semifinals with a mark of 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
The Golden Wolves got off to a strong start as they swept the doubles points. However, two of the three matches were highly competitive as the first and third doubles went to tiebreakers. Kevin Angeles and Michael Brophy edged
Tej Laliwala and
Jack Leinbach 8-7 (7-5) in the first doubles match. Alvernia's duo of Drew Heinzelmann and Thomas Figurelli outlasted
Hayden Musser and
Ben Dorsey 8-7 (7-3).
The Golden Wolves swept the first three singles matches in straight sets to capture the overall victory. Dorsey picked up York's only win for the day as he beat Jayden Lewis 8-2 in the fourth singles match. Alvernia closed out the match with wins at fifth and sixth singles for the 8-1 win.
Freshmen Dorsey and
Evan Stehman led the Spartans in single wins for the year as Dorsey was 5-5 with four of his wins coming at fourth singles. Stehman went 5-8 for the Green and White. The doubles tandem of Laliwala and Leinbach earned three doubles wins to pace the Spartans.
York returns to action next September as the new Spartan Tennis Center is set to open on West Campus.
