YORK, PA – The York College Athletic Department is pleased to announce the 2021 Athletic Hall of Fame Class has been selected for enshrinement this October.
Kali Macgregor,
Joseph Merkle,
Steve Mersinger and
Jon Ports comprise the 31
st Spartan Athletic Hall of Fame class.
Macgregor was a two-time All-Capital Athletic Conference first team women's soccer selection while she was also a two-time NSCAA All-Middle Atlantic regional selection. Macgregor was an instrumental part of the Spartans' first Capital Athletic Conference championship in 2007 as that squad also advanced to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 for the first time in school history.
For her career, Macgregor played in 84 games for the Spartans. She notched 16 points on six goals and four assists from her central defensive position. She recorded two game winning goals and was 1-for-1 in PK's. The Spartans went 53-21-9 during Macgregor's career while they were 23-8-2 in CAC play.
Joseph Merkle enters the Spartan Hall of Fame as an administrator after serving as the York College Dean of Student Affairs and the Vice President for Student Affairs for 34 years. As an advocate for sports and wellness, Merkle was an enthusiastic supporter of everything Spartan. During his time, intercollegiate athletics grew from 16 sports to 23. Five of the new sports were women's programs. All but two of current Spartan teams compete and practice in or on a facility built during Merkle's tenure. His office oversaw athletics and campus recreation under three different presidents. During his three-plus decades of leadership, the athletics and recreation staff expanded from five full-time employees, to 24.
Steve Mersinger was a four-year standout on the men's lacrosse team from 2006-2009. He was a three-time All-Capital Athletic Conference selection for the Spartans. He was the men's lacrosse program's first-ever USILA All-American, as he earned the honor as a senior for the Green and White. Mersinger held the Spartan caused turnover record from the time of his graduation until 2016 when Josh Kluver eclipsed his mark.
Mersinger played in 59 games for the Spartans as he recorded 60 caused turnovers, grabbed 212 ground balls and registered four assists from his defensive position. The Spartans posted 34 wins during Mersinger's time on the field for York.
Jon Ports enters the Hall of Fame as the greatest player in the storied history of the Spartan men's soccer program. Ports was the 2009 NCAA Division III National Player of the Year. He was a three-time NSCAA First-Team All-American in addition to being a three-time All-Region selection. Ports was a two-time Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year and played in three NCAA tournaments during his Spartan career.
Ports played in 68 career games for the Spartans. He recorded 101 points on 33 goals and 35 assists during his time in the Green and White. Ports recorded eight game-winning goals as the Spartans went a staggering 56-4-8 during his time on the pitch. York advanced to the Elite Eight his sophomore year and the Sweet 16 during his senior campaign.
The four new honorees will join last year's 2020 class and officially be inducted into the Hall of Fame during Fall Fest weekend in early October.
