READING, PA – The York College men's tennis team picked up a long awaited first win of the year as they edged Alvernia University 5-4 in MAC Commonwealth action on Monday afternoon in Reading, Pa.
The Spartans improve to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the MAC Commonwealth. The Golden Wolves fall to 0-6 and 0-3 in the league.
The Golden Wolves took two of the three doubles points to jump out to a 2-1 lead. The third doubles team of Scott Miller and Camden Kasovac earned an 8-4 victory over Derrick and Dylan Boltz to get the Spartans on the board.
Alvernia's Michael Brophy outlasted York's Tej Laliwala 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the first singles match. Jack Leinbach cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 straight set win in the second singles match up.
The Golden Wolves would capture the third singles match in a prolonged battle between York's Michael Spagnoli and Alvernia's Thomas Figurelli. Figurelli won 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), putting the hosts up 4-2. The Spartans would go on to win the final three matches. Miller earned a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) fourth singles win over Derrick Boltz. The Spartans tied the overall match at four when Kasovac posted a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win in the fifth singles match.
York captured victory with Matthew Christian's lengthy 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) sixth singles win over Dylan Boltz.
The Spartans conclude their regular season on Wednesday afternoon with a trip to Eastern University to face the Eagles. The match is slated for a 2:00 pm start.
