Spartan Women Earn First CAC Victory of the Year

MIDDLETOWN, PA – The York College women's tennis team notched a 7-2 Capital Athletic Conference road win on Thursday afternoon in Middletown, PA as the Spartans downed Penn State Harrisburg.

The Spartans improve to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the league while the Lions fall to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in the CAC.

The Spartans captured two of the three doubles matches to take the early lead. The first doubles tandem of Rachel Wagner and Gina Liguori earned an 8-2 win in their match, staking the Spartans to the early lead. Hannah Shinsky and Caroline Marderness rolled past their third doubles opponents 8-1 as York took a 2-1 advantage to the singles matches.

Wagner earned a 6-2, 6-3 first singles win over Sydney Nye. Wagner improves to 6-1 at first singles for the Spartans. Liguori earned an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Maria Torre. Liguori is now 5-1 at second singles and 5-2 overall for the year.

The Lions earned their lone singles win at the number three match but the Spartans closed out the match with wins at four, five, and six singles. Chloe Doyle posted a 6-3, 6-2 fourth singles win over Claire Hackenberg. Shinskey earned a three-set fifth singles win while Marderness recorded a 6-3, 6-1 sixth singles win. Doyle and Shinsky both improved to 5-2 overall while Marderness is 3-0 in singles play for the campaign.

The Spartans return to action on Sunday when they travel to Salisbury University to face the Sea Gulls in a CAC contest. The match is set for a 1:00 pm start.
