Wagner Knocks off Ranked Foe in CAC Match Against CNU

YORK, PA – The #24 Christopher Newport Captains earned an 8-1 win over York College in Capital Athletic Conference women's tennis action on Friday afternoon at the Wisehaven Tennis Club in York. The Captains improve to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Spartans fall to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.

The Captains swept the three doubles point. The Spartans numer one duo of Katie Wagner and Darian Naill were played the closest match as they fell to McKinney Harwood and Alexandra Drye, 8-2.

The Spartans' lone point came from the outstanding performance of Wagner as she downed #16 ranked McKinney Harwood 6-2, 2-6, 10-5 in the first singles match up. Wagner sprinted out to an early 4-1 lead in the third set. She took an 8-2 lead before Harwood cut it to 8-5. Wagner captured the final two points to win the match. Wagner improves to 5-1 overall including 1-0 against regionally ranked opponents. Wagner is also now 26-6 for her Spartan career.

The Captains swept the final five singles matches to earn the 8-1 win.

York returns to action on Sunday when they travel to Salisbury for another CAC contest. The match is slated for a 1:00 pm start in Salisbury, Maryland. Today's match against the Captains kicks off a five match in s eight day stretch for York.
