Spartan Women Celebrate a Successful Senior Day

YORK, PA – The York College women's swim team celebrated their 2016 Senior Day with a 106-89 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon in York.

The Spartans have now won three straight as they improve to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in the league. The Bobcats are now 3-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

The Green and White honored senior Madison Tonkay (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) prior to the meet as part of the Senior Day ceremonies.

The great feelings of senior day carried over into the meet for the Spartans. The Green and White started the meet with a second, third and fourth place performance in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Kate McConaghy (Phoenixville, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Samantha Hay (Bangor, Pa./Bangor), Maddy Mann (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical), and Andrea Sturgis (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) finished second with with a combined time of 1:58.72. They finished just .06 seconds out of first place.

Sophomore Brianna Blackwell (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) kicked off the individual events as she won the 1000 free with a time of 11:55.72 to earn nine points for York. Tonkay placed third in the event to pick up three points for the Green and White.

Mann continued her big weekend as the freshman standout rolled to an easy win in the 200 free as she clocked in with a time of 2:02.37 as she won the race by 8.1 seconds. Junior Taylor Michielini (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) was third in the race with a time of 2:11.35 as she narrowly missed finishing second.

The Bobcats got a win in the 50 free but three Spartans followed to earn 10 points for York. Sturgis was the runner up with a time of 26.71 while Taylor Witte (University Park, Md./St. John's College) was third at 26.80. York also had a strong showing in the 200 IM as the Bobcats secured the top spot only to see York capture spots two through five to earn 10 of the 19 points available in the event. Kacey Banks (Silver Spring, Md./Spencerville Adventist Academy) placed second with a time of 2:29.97 followed by Hay in third with a time of 2:33.55.

McConaghy earned a win in the 100 fly as she edged teammate Nicole Clark (Crofton, Md./South River) by one second. McConaghy finished with a time of 1:30 while Clark was at 1:31.

Sturgis had another solid swim in the 100 free as she placed second to lead York in the event. Sturgis touched the wall in a time of 57.86 while Danielle Werner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) was third with a time of 58.46. Freshman Julia Bogdanski (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.29. McConaghy placed second as she was only .17 seconds back of Bogdanski.

Mann earned her second individual win of the day as she cruised to the win in the 500 free, completing the race in a time of 5:32.33. Blackwell (5:49.0) was second followed by Banks (5:56.26) in third. York swam the final two events as exhibition as the result had already been decided.

York returns to action on Friday evening when they host Randolph-Macon in a non-conference meet. The action starts at 5:00 pm.
