Spartan Women Start 2016 With a Pair of Wins

YORK, PA – The York College women's swim squad made their first meet of 2016 a successful one as the Spartans swept a tri-meet on Friday night in York. The Spartans defeated Gallaudet 117-62 and Penn State Altoona 117-67.

York improves to 4-6 overall with the two wins.

The Spartans won the first eight events and swam the last three events as exhibition.

The Green and White kicked off the night with a one-two finish in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Kate McConaghy (Phoenixville, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Samantha Hay (Bangor, Pa./Bangor), Kacey Banks (Silver Spring, Md./Spencerville Adventist Academy), and Taylor Michielini (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) teamed up to win the event with a time of 2:02.19. They edged the foursome of Julia Bogdanski (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), Mackenzie Donahue (Indiana, Pa./Indiana), Danielle Werner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) and Taylor Witte (University Park, Md./St. John's College) as they posted a time of 2:05.25.

Sophomore Brianna Blackwell (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) earned the first individual win of the night as she captured the 1000 free with a time of 11:54.56. Freshman Andrea Sturgis (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Reilly Kobus (York, Pa./Northeastern) finished 1-2 in the 200 free as Sturgis notched a time of 2:03.38.

Freshman standout Maddy Mann (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical) led a 1-2-3 finish in the 50 free. Mann won the race with a time of 25.51 while Witte (26.68) finished second followed by Michiellini (26.98) who placed third. York got another 1-2-3 finish in the 200 IM as Banks won the event followed by Hay and Bogdanski. Banks notched a time of 2:29.26 while Hay clocked in with a time of 2:32.30 while Bogdanski was right behind at 2:33.66.

York rolled to a third straight 1-2-3 finish in the 100 fly. McConaghy earned the win with a time of 1:06.53 while Banks (1:08.53) was second and Nicole Clark (Crofton, Md./South River) (1:16.42) was third.

Mann picked up her second individual win of the night with a victory in the 100 free as she traversed the pool in a time of 56.35. Kobus (1:01.97) was second and Aubree Snyder (Brogue, Pa./Red Lion) (1:04.45) was third. Bogdanski earned a win as York notched its fifth straight 1-2-3 finish in the 100 backstroke. Bogdanski recorded a time of 1:05.92 followed by Sara Zalkind (Dowingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) (1:08.81) was second followed by Alex Bowman (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Spalding) (1:11.37) who was third.

York would have picked up three more wins in the three events they swam as exhibition would have all been victories for York as they recorded the top times in all three events.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon as they will host Frostburg State University in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. The meet will be preceded by York's 2016 Senior Day ceremony as York's five seniors will be recognized. The meet is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
