Spartan Men Roll to Two Wins to Start 2016

YORK, PA – The York College men's swim squad swept a non-conference tri-meet on Friday night in York. The Spartans defeated Gallaudet 152-34 and Penn State Altoona 149-29.

The Spartans improve to 5-5 with the two victories as they opened up the second semester portion of their schedule.

The Spartans won all ten races before swimming the 400 freestyle relay as a exhibition.

The evening began with a one-two sweep of the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Morgan Schreiber (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Calif./Rio Mesa), Trevor Brinton (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove), and Jacob McConnell (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington) combined to finish with a time of 1:38.74. The quartet of David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md./James Hubert Blake), Donald Timmerman (Randolph, N.J./Randolph), Nick Leidy (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley), and Ben Hassinger (York, Pa./York Suburban) finished second with a time of 1:45.05.

Esdras Moore (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) picked up a win in the 1000 free as he traversed the pool in a time of 11:07.94. McConnell, Colin Sload-Diehl (Windsor, Pa./Red Lion), and Brandon Tarbrake (Beltsville, Md./Gonzaga College), swept the top three spots in the 200 freestyle to increase the York lead. McConnell finished with a time of 1:50.85 while Sload-Diehl was just under seven seconds back at 1:57.45. Tarbrake posted a time of 1:58.73.

York kept rolling with a one-two finish from Brinton and Artem Peshenko (Elkins Park, Pa./Abington) in the 50 free. Brinton earned a time of 23.09 while Peshenko had a time of 23.30. Walthall picked up another win for York as the senior All-American led two teammates as York went 1-2-3 in the 200 IM. Walthall notched a time of 2:02.73 while Martin Dichmann-Schmidt (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown) was second and Leidy was third.

Leidy earned his win in the 100 butterfly and he edged Brinton in the event. Leidy had a time of 57.60 while Brinton touched the wall in a time of 58.06.

McConnell earned his second win of the night as he was victorious in the 100 free with a time of 50.39. Peshenko (51.48) finished second while Nick Foltz (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) (52.24) placed third. Schreiber won the 100 backstroke as the sophomore finished with a time of 55.34. Altobelli placed second with a time of 58.63.

Walthall earned his second individual win of the evening with a victory in the 500 free as he notched a time of 5:06.63. Sload-Diehl was second for York with a time of 5:19.51. Timmerman concluded the night for York as he led a pair of teammates as York swept the top three spots in the 100 breaststroke. Timmerman earned the win with a time of 1:02.63 while Tim McCullough (Rose Valley, Pa./Strath Haven) (1:03.29) was second and Billy Sieck (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Schuylkill Haven) (1:09.11) placed third.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon as they will host Frostburg State University in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. The meet will be preceded by York's 2016 Senior Day ceremony as York's five seniors will be recognized. The meet is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
