Women's Tennis Opens Campaign with 9-0 Win over Goucher

YORK, PA – The York College women's tennis team opened their 2015 fall campaign in impressive fashion as the Spartans rolled past Goucher College 9-0 in a non-conference contest in York on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon.

The Spartans improve to 1-0 while the Gophers are now 0-1.

The Green and White started the afternoon with a second doubles win from Rachel Wagner (Chantily, Va./Chantily) and Carter Vaughn (Washington, D.C./School Without Walls) as the combined to record an 8-1 win. The third doubles combo of Mckenzie Krout (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and Megan Jones (Felton, Pa./Red Lion) pushed the Spartan lead to 2-0 with an 8-3 victory over Miranda Egan-Brooks and Mackenzie Donohue.

The Spartans' number one doubles team of Katie Wagner (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) and Darian Naill (New Windsor, Md./South Carroll) posted an 8-3 win to complete the doubles sweep.

The singles results were much of the same as the Spartans played well in all six matches. Rachel Wagner was the first Spartan to get a single result as she won the second singles match love and love over Kirsten Cianci. Katie Wagner was the next Spartan to finish as she won her first singles match 6-0, 6-4. Vaughn extended the York lead to 5-0 as she won the fifth singles match against Donohue 6-1, 6-0.

Naill finished her fourth singles match with 6-1, 6-2 win over Egan-Brooks. Krout completed her third singles match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ali Tomasevich.

Sophomore Elizabeth Wiley (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) completed the shutout for York with a three-set win over Amber Penaloza, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), and 10-4.

The Spartans return to action this weekend as they travel to Hood College on Friday afternoon followed by a trip to Messiah on Saturday. The Hood match begins at 3:30 pm and the Messiah match will start at noon on Saturday.
