YORK, PA - The York College men's tennis team split a pair of Capital Athletic Conference matches on Saturday in York. The Spartans fell to #17 Mary Washington 5-0 before bouncing back to down St. Mary's 7-2.
York is now 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the CAC with Saturday's results.
In the opener against Mary Washington, the meet was abbreviated because some of Friday's snow remained on the Spartan Tennis Centre courts, delaying the start of the match. Because of the scheduled second match against St. Mary's, the teams decided to play singles first. When the Eagles secured wins in the first five singles matches, the match outcome was decided.
In the win over St. Mary's, the Spartans got a pair of doubles wins to start the match. Jake Greenstein (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) and Matt Rosenkrantz (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) combined to post an 8-5 win in the second doubles match. Rory Handlin (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Zach Hanson (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) earned an 8-5 win over their St. Mary's counterparts in the third doubles match as York took a 2-1 lead to singles play.
The Seahawks earned a first singles win but it was all Spartans in the rest of the five singles matches. Greenstein earned a 7-5, 6-2 second singles win over Robert Bishop. Rosenkrantz notched a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Wyatt Paulishak in the third singles matchup. Sophomore Kaltrin Bullaj (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) earned a 6-2, 6-1 fourth singles win for the Green and White. Senior Daniel Erk (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) earned a hard-fought fifth singles win over Nick Ersoy while freshman Devin Lehigh (York, Pa./Central York) posted a 6-3, 6-2 sixth singles win to conclude the match.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host Washington College in a non-conference match. The contest is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
