Spartan Men Open Campaign in Impressive Fashion

YORK, PA – The York College men's swimming team opened the season with a 162-42 non-conference victory over Elizabethtown College on Wednesday night in York.

The Spartans are now 1-0 in the dual meet season while the Blue Jays are now 0-1.

The Spartans opened the night by capturing three of the four top spots in the 200-medley relay race. The top squad of Morgan Schreiber (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), Donald Timmerman (Randolph, N.J./Randolph), Russell Stoll (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes), and Trevor Brinton (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) teamed up to earn a win with a time of 1:41.14. That time was almost five seconds better than the Blue Jays' runner up squad. York took third and fourth in the event in addition to the first place finish.

Esdras Moore (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) and Nick Foltz (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) earned the top two spots in the 1000 free for York. Moore touched the wall in a time of 10:50.14 to win the race. Foltz was second with a time of 11:28.57. York followed that with the three top finishers in the 200 freestyle. Jacob McConnell (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington) picked up his first individual collegiate win with a first place finish as he notched a time of 1:52.42. Stoll placed second with a time of 1:54.68 while Nick Leidy (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) was third with a time of 1:56.29.

York swept the top three spots in the 50 free as the Green and White kept rolling. Brinton earned his first individual collegiate win as he completed the race in a time of 22.47. Artem Peshenko (Elkins Park, Pa./Abington) placed second with a time of 22.95 while Colin Sload-Diehl (Windsor, Pa./Red Lion) was third at 23.37.

Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Calif./Rio Mesa) picked up his first individual win of the year as he recorded the victory in the 200 IM as he completed the race in a time of 2:03.28. Fellow captain David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md./James Hubert Blake) placed second with a time of 2:10.43 while the third Spartan captain, Timmerman, was third at 2:13.61.

The Blue Jays ended the Spartan run of wins in the 100 fly but York did manage to hold down the second through fifth in the event. Leidy was second while Tim McCullough (Rose Valley, Pa./Strath Haven) was third and Sload-Diehl was fourth. York got back in the win column in the 100 free as the Green and White swept the top three spots. Brinton earned his second win of the night as he completed the race in the time of 49.35. Peshenko placed second and Brandon Tarbrake (Beltsville, Md./Gonzaga College) placed third.

Schreiber earned his first individual win of the year as he cruised to victory in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.69. Senior Martin Dichmann-Schmidt (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown) placed third for the Spartans in the event.

Walthall earned his second win of the night as he captured victory in the 500 freestyle. The senior All-American notched a time of 4:59.67. McConnell was second followed by Moore and Altobelli as York registered the top four spots in the event.

Timmerman and McCullough went 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke for the Spartans. Timmerman touched the wall in a time of 1:03.33 while McCullough was just behind him at 1:03.56.

The Green and White closed out the night by taking the top two spots in the 200 free relay. The team of McConnell, Moore, Foltz, and Altobelli earned the win in the event as they combined for a time of 1:34.25. The foursome of Sload-Diehl, Walthall, Peshenko, and Tarbrake were just .5 seconds back of the winners as they took second place by over a second over Elizabethtown's third place team.  

The Spartans head to Salisbury for their Capital Athletic Conference opener on Saturday, October 31. The meet is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
