Saints Edge Spartans on Senior Day

YORK, PA – The Marymount University Saints women's swim team spoiled York College's 2015 senior day as the Saints escaped with a 104-101 Capital Athletic Conference win on Saturday in York.

The Spartans fall to 4-9 and 1-4 in the CAC as they close out their home schedule. The Saints improve to 4-1-1 overall and 1-2 in the league.

The meet kicked off with a tightly contested 200-medley relay as the Saints pulled out a win in the event. The Spartan foursome of Kate McConaghy (Phoenixville, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Samantha Hay (Bangor, Pa./Bangor), Kacey Banks (Silver Spring, Md./Spencerville Adventist Academy), and Courtney Dacheux (Dover, Pa./Dover) combined to finish second with a time of 2:02.73.

The Spartans got valuable points in the 1000 freestyle as the Green and White swept the top three spots in the event. Brianna Blackwell (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) finished first as she touched the wall in a time of 11:59.42. Sophomore Madison Tonkay (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) was second as she recorded a time of 12:12.68 while Maria Allera (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) was third at 12:16.0.

Marymount rebounded to take the top two slots in the 200 freestyle. Spartan senior Sammy Greenwald (Germantown, Md./Northwest) finished third with a time of 2:09.60 while McConaghy was fourth with a time of 2:09.62.

Dacheux celebrated senior day with a win in the 50 free as the Spartan senior recorded a winning time of 25.76 to earn nine team points for York. Sophomore Taylor Michielini (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) placed third at 27.32 while Taylor Witte (University Park, Md./St. Johns College) was fourth with a 27.33.

Marymount earned 14 team points in the 200 IM with Banks breaking up the Saints' finishers as she placed second. The Spartan freshman touched the wall in a time of 22:24.90.

Banks notched a win for York in the 200 fly as she recorded a time 2:20.55. Allera finished fourth in the event with a time of 2:36.92. York had a pair of solid finishes in the 100 free as Dacheux placed second followed by Witte. Dacheux recorded a time of 58.11 while Witte completed the race in a time of 58.72.

The Saints had a big advantage in the 200 backstroke as they captured the top three spots to earn 15 team points. McConaghy finished fourth with a time of 2:28.46. York closed the gap with a strong showing in the 500 free. Banks earned the win in the event as she notched a time of 5:43.42. It was the second win of the day for the freshman. Blackwell finished second at 5:47.24 while Tonkay recorded a fourth place finish.

The Saints captured the win in the 200 breaststroke as Danielle Werner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) and Hay finished second and third in the event. Werner posted a time of 2:45.59 while Hay recorded a time of 2:46.64.

York made a gallant run in the 200 freestyle relay but Marymount secured a second place finish that won the overall event. The Spartan foursome of Witte, McConaghy, Werner, and Dacheux finished first with a time of 1:46.10 to earn 11 points as York fell just short in the overall meet.

The Spartans conclude their 2014-15 regular season with a trip to Rowan University to face the Profs on Saturday, February 7. The meet is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
