YORK, PA – The York College men's swim team celebrated their 2015 Senior Day in style as the Spartans cruised past Marymount University 121-79 in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday in York.
The Spartans improve to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the CAC. The Saints fall to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The Green and White got off to a great start as they took first and third in the 200-medley relay. The winning Spartan squad composed of Morgan Schreiber (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), Kyle Walthall (Port Hueneme, Calif./Rio Mesa), senior Cody Latchford (New Castle, Del./William Penn), and senior Bryant Hughes (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy) rolled to a new pool record of 1:37.74 as they earned 11 points.
Sophomore Russell Stoll (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) earned the win in the 1000 free as he cruised to a 26-second win. Stoll touched the wall in a time of 10:28.50. Junior David Altobelli (Silver Spring, Md./James Hubert Blake) finished third in the event, recording a time of 11:03.66.
Latchford celebrated his senior day with a win in the 200 freestyle as he recorded a time of 1:49.43. Matt Terrell (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) placed fourth for the Spartans with a time of 1:56.25.
Senior Shane Bonner (Ridley, Pa./Ridley Park) earned a win in his last home meet with a victory in the 50 free with a time of 22.0. Hughes finished third while Nick Lucash (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) placed fourth for York. The Spartans picked up their fourth straight win as Walthall earned a win in the 200 IM, completing the event in a time of 2:03.71. Freshman Artem Peshenko (Elkins Park, Pa./Abington) was third while Donald Timmerman (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) was fifth for York.
Schreiber kept the beat going for York as he won the 200 fly with time of 2:04.10. Nick Leidy (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) touched the wall in fourth as he recorded a time of 2:16.15. Bonner recorded his second win of the day as he won the 100 freestyle in a time of 49.57. Hughes continued his strong final home meet with a second place finish, as he was just .05 seconds back of Bonner.
Stoll recorded his second win of the day as the sophomore won the 200 backstroke in a dominating time of 2:00.45, exactly six seconds in front of the second place finisher. Latchford finished third with a time of 2:09.67 while Martin Dichmann-Schmidt (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown) was fourth for York.
Schreiber notched his second win of the day for the Green and White as he won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:59.77. Tim DeCoursey (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) finished third while Altobelli was fourth in the race.
The Green and White swam the final two events as exhibition as the result was safely in hand. Walthall swam the 200 breaststroke in a pool record time of 2:07.25 as he would have won the event by 12 seconds had it not been an exhibition.
Prior to the meet, the Spartans honored Bonner, Hughes, and Latchford. The threesome have led the Spartans to a four-year record of 36-17-2 while they own a Capital Athletic Conference mark of 15-5. The class has won a school-record 11 meets twice in their career with the opportunity to establish a new standard in their final meet of the year in two weeks.
The Spartans conclude their 2014-15 regular season on Saturday, February 7 when they travel to Rowan University to face the Profs. The meet is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
